My interpretation, based on the neutral ending note, is that the school never existed. The mother felt guilty about punishing her daughter because it didn't fit her idea of that role: "I can give her this discipline, but not as her mother." So she created the persona of Mother Apollonia, pretending to be a teacher in a boarding school: "If I can't save her as her mother, then her mother will have to leave. The Sister will have to guide her. This home will be her school. This woman will be her teacher."
You can see that the clown doll is still in the daughter's room - the girl never left her home, all the torture she went through was by the hands of her mother.

I have a friend who lives to a church, she was been treated badly with the nuns, also being strict to her, one time she tells me that she accidently break a chair, the random nun already demanded her to pay for it (expensive though.), seeing this game made me think about her terrible situation living in there, after long years I am happy that she now live with her biological parents.

I think the “Forgiven Ending” has two meanings, the tiny nun representing her daughter a nun (innocent and pure soul). When her mom burns the nun it represents how Mrs. McDonnell thought her daughter was going to hell but also how she sent her to basic hell. But in Mrs. McDonnell’s own mind she believes that she has been forgiven for having stoped this deranged psychopath (represents how she didn’t like how her daughter didn’t believe in god and thought she was stopping her from great suffering in hell by sending her to that school). So in the end Mrs. McDonnell in her own broken and twisted mind was rewarded and allowed into heaven, but in reality having taken the life of a innocent girl only thinking that she did the right thing.

The story of this game has the potential to be adapted into a movie or maybe a series, and fits so much the Silent Hill narrative that could also be the main plot of one of these games.

Those screams from the Nun were actual screams of someone named Ruth Price, who was attacked by a prowler while she was trying to notify the operator, she called, about a man outside her home. The prowler got into her home and attacked her, thus producing her screams that you can hear from the Nun in this game. One of the creepiest things about this game, and a bit of an odd choice to use that sound for the Nun.

In my opinion the nun is like Pyramid Head from Silent Hill a being born of self-loathing it takes the form of the nun because Mrs. Macdonald wanted to blame someone other then herself for what happened and the clown doll was a representative of Jenny and after destroying the monsters that her tortured her daughter finally forgave her mother believing that she didn’t know what truly happened

I'm just kinda torn with this whole lore. I believe Ms.Mcdonell was very wrong for sending her child to the school, but she had no idea what exactly she was subjecting her to.

A theory i have is that janie is actually the mother in child form.
The mother (janie) was probably sent to the school as a child and tortured like this. (It talks about mother apollonia in past tense) And once she was out as an adult, she inflicted the same abuse on her child but at home (bongo the clown was still in her house, showing that the daughter never left home).

She drove her child to killing herself in her own home, and spiraled into a mental illness, where she went back to the abandoned school where she was abused by mother apollonia. She couldn't accept that she drove her child to suicide, and her going back to the school was her punishment, where she is trapped in purgatory.

The person chasing her is her daughter in the form of mother apollonia, the nun who abused and targetted her, doing so once again and tormenting her as she tries to escape the place where she was abused(to get out of purgatory). In the letters it hints that Mrs. Mcdonnell was the abuser of her daughter, not mother apollonia

The ending coryxkenshin got (going to heaven) makes the purgatory theory make a lot of sense

I always believe that she’s already dead and she was in purgatory atoning for her sins! I always thought that that was the truth
