I love this knot. Once I discovered it that's all I've been using. I've landed 50lb tarpon using it. It holds up great. Simple efficient, and effective.

So if I understand you correctly you have approximately 3 ft of leader out past the end of your rod when you cast. I do a better job of casting when there is only a few inches of line out past my rod tip...There is another way to tie a surgeon's knot that makes it go thru the lime guides easier. Instead of starting with the limes parallel to one another put them end to end and overlap them a few inches then make the knot each time pulling the leader and end of the main line thru the loop. I have never noticed any ticking sound as the knot goes thru the guides. You are absolutely correct about the keep it simple. A lot of the knots you see on you tube here take forever to tie. When you are fishing you don't want to waste your time tying knots.

I use this knot for everything I fish. It has never failed me. Like he says just don't bring it through the guides and you will enjoy this knot all day long.

This is simple, and it works. Thanks for the tutorial. I enjoy your down to earth approach. Keep up the good work.

I recently started using this knot. It's fast and strong. I have used the double uni before but i hear the surgeon's knot is stronger.

I have used this knot for many years, it's good, it works . Easy and simple no problems.

if you face the 2 lines opposite each other and tie the same knot it will lie flat and not be bulky i use it all the time fly fishing when changing out my tippet to leader its fast and easy and holds up the most flats fish on the Texas coast.

Hey buddy, since you're only using a short leader you can make a variation of the surgeon knot that will lay straight.
Take your 3 foot leader and lay it over your main line overlapping enough to make your loop with about 6 inches of tag on your main line. Run your entire leader plus the main line tag through your loop 4 to 6 times depending on the size of the leader material. Tyoical deal thicker less, thinner more. Wet it and pull all four lines then tighten up separately. Learned that one from Lucas on Salt Strong. I like your style. Simple is better but the surgeon and uni and Alberto knots with cut you off with mono/fluoro to braid before the line breaks especially on small diameter braid. I've tested it over and over with different line up to a PE 3 8X braid that's as smooth as a baby's bottom and 50 pound mono and 60 pound fluoro and the results are consistent. But the FG is a bitch to tie in the field for a lot of guys including myself. The best non FG connection I've tested where the line breaks at least one inch from the knot, usually on the braid, is a surgeon loop on my braid with a Yucatan or Alberto knot to the leader and a ruzzutu finish on both knots. It's easier than it sounds.

This is the only knot I use too because of the ease and fraction of time it takes to tie. One suggestion though. You take both tag ends of the main line and leader and you have both ends facing the same direction when you start to tie the knot. I believe this is what makes the knot stand up instead of laying flat. Instead, take the tag ends of both the main line and leader and lay them side by side, 4 to 6 inches, but with the tag ends of both facing opposite directions. Then make the loop and pass the leader and tag end of the main line through the loop 4 times, wet, then tighten and I think you will find the knot now laying flat!

If you lay the lines parallel and pass the whole of the leader material through the loop on each wrap then you still get a very small knot, but one that will easily pass through the guides

Brilliant and possibly the best knot tying advice I have ever heard

Like you I also hate the "tick, tick, tick, tick, tick" of a knot passing through the rod guides. I want to thank you for the simplicity of just saying "Don't Do it Then!" If you are not going to do it, then just use a simple, fast knot to tie. The 4 Loop Surgeon is it!!!!
Just to justify what your point is, Luke from Salt Strong also STRONGLY suggest to NOT allow your braid to leader knot to pass through the guides either. He says over time the knot hitting the guides will weaken the knot and cause failure eventually.
Again, thanks for the "simplicity" of this video. I think your logic is spot on.

Love the video. My sentiments exactly. One thing I have learned is some fisherman value style over function. There are lots of great knots, but in my freshwater fishing experuence any well tied knot will do fine. Ninety percent of time I use a surgeons loop for leader, palomar for straight to hook, and snell for pitching . It is a bit of fun tying the FG, Jam knot, and other more "involved" knots, and they work grea. People should learn them, and use if they prefer, but they are probably nit gonna be the difference in landing that rare ten pound bass. You will lose 100 times more fish from being lazy and not retying knicked line than you will due to knot failure

I’m really glad I came across this video! As much for the knot as for the real world common sense. I take out four rods with my wife and tie 3’ of mono leader with a modified Albright knot onto each one at the house before I leave. If I have to tie another lure in the boat I have plenty of leader left to do it with. But, like you I don’t run the knot through the guides when casting even though the Albright will go through. I just don’t like the extra friction affecting the length of my cast and over time abrading the line at the knot. I primarily use 10 lb Powerpro braid with 15 or 20 lb Andy mono leader for inshore saltwater. After watching your video and your reasoning I know for a fact if I have to tie leader to mainline again in the boat I’m using your simple knot. The currents pulling, the wind is pushing, the boats rocking, the fish are biting, and I’m trying to tie my Albright? Fuhgetaboutit! That’s another reason why I take out 4 pre rigged rods. Thanks for the wake up to reality advice.

I use the regular surgeon's knot and a 8ft leader of course with braid you want to do double the amount of wraps that you would typically do with mono. so with braid you want to do 6 to 8 wraps instead of the typical 3 to 4 that you do for straight mono.

note: also if you don't want them not to stick out the side you actually overlap the two lines the same way you would do with the double uni knot. but then you make the loop with both lines facing each other overlapped and then you make the wraps with the whole leader going through that loop 6 times and that will eliminate that knot from protruding out like that.

thanks ty! this knot has changed the way I fish. No more swivels!!

You're absolutely right ! I watched dozens of videos, tried Alberto, double uni, and others but bottom line, so to speak, is that I'm not using more than 2 - 3 feet FL leader / Not letting it react the top guide ! So this one is quickest to tie ..
