Camera history in the making. What a Find! I love my Canon P silver body, serial number says 1961. What a delight it is to use with a 35, 50, and 100 lens. You are one lucky duck. Thank o for sharing your find with us that appreciate these things.

Without even asking, a box came to me in the 1980's. An uncle had died, who I only met once while on the east coast in the Army around 1971. He used to be one of the production vice presidents of publicity for Paramount in the 50's and 60's. Later, he ran a chain of theaters on the east coast. I think my film interest then was old Universal horror movies and of course 2001. In this box was the first Contax 35mm model, which this Canon reminds me off, it's leather case, and a 4x5 speed graphic in it's case with a drawer loaded with flash bulbs. The Contax had a curtain shutter that was iffy. Had it for about ten years, then sold it to buy a Yamaha Rev 7 reverb rack mount. What a thing to get in the mail.

Congrats on your on your grail..nice to see a "real one"... I also saw you are using the Ollsen dot on the rangefinder to help out the rangefinder contrast..

My dad was a photojournalist. I have 3 of those black paint Canon Ps and some Nikon S rangefinders and Leica Ms.

JVC, that is an unusual find!, I've watched (& subscribed to your channel ) over many episodes & have found them to be very informative. I possess a 'P' w/50mm f1.4 lens, (which was gifted to me) in excellent working condition. I team it up with a very small Keks EM-01 shoe mount light meter. I sourced a 48>49 step up ring to use my collection of 49mm filters & lens hood. It still has the original leather case, again in excellent condition, (I tend to use the half case for protection.) It's my 'Japanese Leica'! May I respectfully point out that the fixed framelines are 35/50/100 & the locking device on the baseplate was used to 'lock & unlock' dedicated Canon reloadable cassettes. May you enjoy your photographic forays! Stephen, (from Australia).

Try finding a black paint Canon FX ...I got one several years ago off of the internet. Have not seen another for sale since then. According to Wikipedia there were only two known examples until I found another. My camera is featured on Camerapedia via Flickr. That’s a beautiful canon P in black paint...don’t even think about re-painting it! best regards, G

Looking to get one of these cameras myself. Don't mind having one to clean up as it'll keep the price lower when I go to buy it.

Hello sir, I love your videos, they are very informative. I have a question. Could you tell me how much a Canon P Black costs in Japan? I don't need one in mint condition, but rather a used one like the one in your video, but one that works. Thank you for your help.

I enjoy my Canon P very much. Will you be leaving that camera in its raw worn state or will you be having it repainted?

Lovely! I just acquired one P that on each roll the frame counter automatically resets. Any idea if the mechanism is easy to fix? Thanks!

Cool presentation about Canon P. My only complaint about his presentations is his stubborn insistence on pronouncing Leica as

Apart from the dedicated collector who must have one of everything, I've never understood the attraction of black body cameras. The Canon P is neither rare nor blessed with the best combination of features, so as a owner of many Canon RF bodies and lenses, I've never bothered with a P. This one is truly ugly, and you cannot have it repainted, or it looses its cache as a "black body".It's probably different in Japan, but it is practically impossible to get anyone to work on the shutter is the P, 7 and 7s in the US. Yes, you can raise the tension on the shutter to repair the slow running fast speeds, but many have reached their limit of adjustment and need a new spring replacement, which isn't happening. That why my user is a VIT with its older shutter, rather than my 7 or 7Sz.
