This is a short review and unboxing of the RTX powered Legion Y740 Laptop.

Unfortunately it seems like I recieved a bad unit although the performance was pretty good.

All the benchmark results are with stock settings.

This particular unit must have slipped through the the cracks at Lenovo.

If you're thinking about buying this laptop, go for it. Don't let my review scare you. I'm just one out of many. Not all of them(laptops) are going to be bad and If you end up getting a bad one, you can always return it. PS. Don't forget to subscribe for more content!

I recently bought the Y740 17 inch with a i7-8750h and 2080 max q and my first unit was a dud, it was reaching 98 degrees Celsius just Using Microsoft edge. My second unit after talking to Lenovo support for a hour and demanding a new laptop after them insisting to take my first laptop in for repair, was perfect. My fans are not very loud at all at max fan and my temps have never gotten over 80 degrees Celsius. I have almost not light bleed and my track pad has been great so far. My fps is amazing in all games and I couldn’t be any happier with it.

Legit the only review that mentioned half of these issues

I just got the y740 2070 max q and I haven’t experienced any of the problems you mentioned. At least some of he, anyway. The touchpad works perfectly with no lag. And when running the 3D Mark Time Spy stress, the Gpu and CPU never cracked 70 degrees Celsius. I saw CPU does thermal throttle when benchmarking.
.When benchmarking Rise of the Tome raider, the CPU throttled to about 3.2 to 3.5 MHz during the more intensive scenes. The Gpu stayed very cool, never cracking 70 degrees Celsius during Rise of Tomb Raider. But actually while playing Rise of the Tomb Raider for about 2 hours, the CPU never throttled. It stayed at 3.9 mhz the whole time. My biggest problem with the unit is the very bad light bleed.

Playing Doom on my Y740 it hovered around 90s to mid 90's peaking at 97. That seems way too hot to me. Maybe they were careful when they sent out the review units and not with us common folk.

I guess I'll chime in. I had the same issues as you. Speakers would pop at 30~40% volume, extreme light bleed on the right of the screen, and I didn't think much of this till you mentioned it but my fans were LOUD! Laptop would also run extremely hot. I'm getting a replacement unit through Lenovo. Love the laptop but I had a bad unit as well.

I had a 17 inch y740 I returned because of similar issues you have. The trackpad randomly quit working until I reinstalled windows and my CPU also throttled pretty badly even after a repaste. Lightbleed also was pretty bad. Also the killer network card would keep disconnecting WiFi. Just a total mess. Too many issues for a $2000+ dollar laptop.

I bought the same mode. Thermal I think is very good, cpu seems never throttling and GPU always below even 70. I can Oc the GPU as much as 175MHz plus 300MHz Vram and still stable. Overall it is a fantastic laptop that can be used for both working and gaming. The only thing that I am not so satisfied is backlight bleeding, I returned two units for this reason, until the 3rd one still has some minor bleeding at very dark scenes but I accepted as it is.

Screw it imma buy it anyway. Lenovo usually builds great laptops with great customer support and getting tired of searching for the perfect laptop from the perfect brand (which doesn't exist lol). Plus its cheaper than the ASUS strix scar ii which is what i was going to get. My only concern is the software. Lenovo has a history of spying

Great review! Just to clarify, it’s a zone RGB keyboard right? Not per key lighting?

y740 here with RTX 2060 and 9th gen i7, thermal issues in all games usually 93*C, will attempt repasting with grizzly kryonaut if that fails I will try to talk with the shop that sold the unit to me see if they can do something about it

Can I please get your opinion on whether I should choose this laptop with an rtx 2060 or the Asus Rog scar 2 with the same rtx 2060 since they're both very similarly priced where I'm staying.

I need a laptop for Photoshop, LR, AE, PP and I would like to catch up some favourite games I missed in the past. I had MBP and since Cook's and Ive's head injury there are no more Nvidia cards in MBPs making Apple laptop pretty useless for Adobe aplications or at least the money invested and the performance gotten out of Apple device is contrast.
So basically I am looking for Win10 based equivalent and y740 is the best candidate by far. However I really do hate the keyboard. So uncomfortable for typing with all ten fingers. My friend just got one y740 and he promised me to show me some heavy PSD files to work with etc etc.
I like the fact that you can add an additional battery instead of the drive. I like ram upgrade(pretty imporant for some AE effects). I am pretty scared if I buy one I get a bad one :(

Nice review video, especially for the first one! I'd say it was nice that you mentioned the build quality and rigidity of the case. Would be good to compare it to some other laptops that you have or had hands on - may be not even of the same price range or category but that will bring to your viewers more of an idea on what that device actually feels like. As for the quality control, looks like you actually got an early batch demo sample - happens from time to time with different manufacturers (i got for instance a demo huawei p9 long time ago that was with a "normal" retail s/n, but was found to be a demo phone only when it went for a warranty battery replacement; long story short - got money back for it). If that's your notebook - just give it back to a retail store and buy one from the latter batch. Even my slim Razer does better on heat dissipation which is strange - in my experience lenovo usually does a good job on cooling solutions of their laptops.

Wow! Man I dunno if you really got a bad unit or if you are the only one being honest, all the reviews for this laptops mark it as the best right now and the best in cooling system dunno what to think

I bought mine 2 months ago here in UAE. Screen already flickers. Looks like most of the units of lenovo are bad. Fan was too noisy as well. And lenovo wont bothere to change for a newone they will just repair my unit.

hey muzek, I can confirm that lenovo does have quality control issues on certain batches. I had the same rtx 2070 max q, 15 inch model, but for mine the GPU failed and I will be sending it back after receiving a brand new replacement. The lid is wobbly when opening moving, the metal parts are not the "macbook" kind of quality because they are quite thin sheets of aluminium.

most importantly, i had the same issue with thermal throttling, this is because thermal paste or the system is low quality or faulty on certain batches, idle temps were always around 50c, and cpu hit 90c all the time during moderate loads. meanwhile, bob of all trades did a video on his, where his idle temps were 30 to 40, and maximum were in the 70s for both components. quality control issues galore. :(

Hello ! Nice review ! A question: can you switch off the Logo at the back of the screen ?

Is this the black version? Or is it the standard one?
