The Achates Power 2.7L Opposed-Piston Engine was shown at the 2018 North American International Auto Show. The truck will achieve a combined 37 MPG, exceeding the proposed CAFE 2025 regulation. The 3 cylinder engine is rated at 270 hp and 480 ft.-lb. of torque. The OP GCI engine is a project of the US Department of Energy’s ARPA-e program.

I want my next F150 to have this power plant!

I need another three cylinder two stroke, mainly for the amazing sound. I hope that the next video has a good soundtrack.

I love this configuration, although it still a large engine for a 2.7L; I understand you're still developing the "package". As with you, another company developed an approach to the supercharger, Torotrak; they have a fully variable-computer controlled unit that you should seriously consider. Torotrak's unit could eliminate the need for the turbo and it's a smaller design. Also, albeit controversial, you could try an arrangement with Subaru for packaging. Their vast experience with the boxer engine could provide a successful packaging solution and, who knows what else.

Very interesting! Hope it becomes available.

Really hope this takes off, would love to see them in the real world. My only question is how they ensure the top crankshaft gets enough oil, and also how they stop it from draining into the cylinders from the top? Seems like years down the line, when an ordinary car would have valve seal leakage, the problem would be amplified here. Could this not lead to a runaway situation?

This is pretty old technology, the Royal Navy had these engines in their Motor Torpedo Boats in the second world war and British Railways used a Deltic version of this engine back in the 1950's, in their Diesel locomotives the Deltic engine was a triangular version of this design and featured six pistons and three crankshafts, feeding a main bearing and six of these in line was capable of producing over 6000 HP at 2200 rpm quite a bit of power for the time.

I wonder what a 900 cc version of this engine could do in a small hybrid car in terms of MPG?

Nice video animation. Interesting that the gear train connecting the two crankshafts is now 3 gears with a large center gear. Earlier representations showed a 5 gear train.

Fantastic! I want the 2 cylinder version (180HP, 320 ft lb, 45mpg [currently 30mpg] ) for my next CUV.

It would be cool to put an engine like this in an old 1970s gas guzzler. Such as Olds 98, Chrysler New Yorker, Buick Electra...

What's happening with Achates currently ? (2019)

An engine like this would shine in the new ford ranger or maybe a new focus rs

A really cool and different idea. I'd love to see something like this come to market. The accessories seem to be packaged a little oddly but you've got a lot of turbos and superchargers to work around!

Seeing these videos about this engine is nice but where do I inquire about buying one that will replace the 5.4 liter engine in my f-150 and how much will it cost.

Was kind of hoping that it would be engineered with a low center of gravity like a boxer engine, flat and low. Instead, they are stacking the cranks so this won't be in any "performance" cars.

is this a diesel or petrol engine? Is this the same principle as the Napier Deltic?

2.7L ECOBOOST®
How does the 2.7L EcoBoost® V6 deliver impressive robust performance and capability?* The answer: features like Ford-first port fuel and direct injection (PFDI) with two injectors per cylinder (one in the air intake port, another inside the cylinder), plus upper block and cylinders made of the high-strength compacted graphite iron used in the Super Duty® 6.7L Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel. And as for strength, the 2.7L EcoBoost powered an aluminum-alloy body F-150 prototype that competed in the 2013 Baja 1000, finishing the race with needing just an air filter replacement. Afterwards, engineers drove that street-legal F-150 back to Michigan.
*Power ratings: 325 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque.

1) 2.7L ecoboost 325 hp 400 ft lb. ****

Which do you think will truck buyers prefer? 3, 1, 2 if HP is important?
OPGCI has an efficiency advantage. Being a two stoke, it also has a power density advantage. Why not take advantage of it?
