Hey Scotty, Just changed my Cat after watching your video. Thanks so much for giving me the confidence to try my own repair! I have a 96 Toyota Tacoma and it had a rattle sound when it was in Drive, but would go away in Neutral. The dealership said they thought it was the Cat but they didn't make the part anymore. They said to try a muffler shop so I started looking online and found your video. Being in California didn't help because of the C.A.R.B. restrictions. Eventually I found a Magnaflow direct fit California compliant Cat at O'reilly Auto Parts. Thirty minutes and your video got the job done! It's running so quiet now, it's like I'm driving a hybrid! Time to rev up my engine! Thanks again!!!

I know nothing about cars but I'm sure learning a lot from your channel! Funny, I have a family full of "mechanics" and nobody ever wanted to teach me anything. I've learned more in a week from you about cars than a lifetime with them. Thanks Scotty!

Just a tip from when I replaced mine on my 91 accord. If the bolts or nuts are too rusty and wont come off. Just take an angle grinder and cut the nut off from the cat side. Even if you cut into the flange a bit. You only cutting into the part your throwing away anyway!

I was told replacing a catalytic converter is a $1000 fix at mechanic's shop (including parts). This doesnt seem like a $1000 worth of work. Damn mechanics are crooks. Looks like it's time to change this sucker myself.

Love your vid's Scotty, might want to tell people after the new cat is installed to start your car and let it warm up to operating temp and shut off car to let interior parts to expand and seat properly. If you just drive it right away this vibration will cause improper seating of honeycomb. Thanks Scott.

I enjoy your show! I’m much less stressed trying to fix my junker than I was before. Appreciate the tips!

Thank you Scottie for the temperature gun idea. Ive been chasing a P0430 code on my 98 Sierra 5.7 for months. I tried every Voodoo/snake oil idea out there and I have to tell you they are all a waste of time and money, at least in my case. The temperature of my cat was the same at both ends so I finally resigned myself to pulling it out to take a look. The honeycomb inside was 90% missing so it was having no effect. Thinking back, months before, I had a bad misfire problem that I was caused by a cracked distributor cap. I guess all that backfiring blew the cat right out.
I think we all watch these videos wishing for a cheap or free solution but sometimes you got to get dirty and spend money.

Depending on the fit and version, this should be fine. However, some cars have 2 converters or one is part of the headers like mine was. Also, if you get leaks, replace the gaskets at both ends, I also use exhaust sealint for some of those not so nice jobs.

Scotty I just have to share with you this story regarding a 2001 Subaru Forester I was literally given by someone I barely knew. Subaru owner's are the lucky few who's car's CATs don't cost very much $270 on Amazon. But I also suggest you also purchase the two O2 sensors with it because you will absolutely need them (they average $50 a piece ON AMAZON), why? Because like the exhaust bolts they may have welded themselves to the pipe and why take a chance you still pull a code after you get everything back together. I brought all of my parts down to Bucky's, got a quote for $150 for the install and sat there for about an hour while they installed it. You may pay $200 for the install if they can't get the old bolts off either as they may have to cut and weld on a new flange. Always order your parts from amazon folks and avoid the markup at the repair shop and at the parts store. This cat was 2x the price at Autozone.

I have never owned a Subaru. This car (no dents, interior just needed cleaning, wouldn't pass emissions and had very little power) was actually given to me by a lady who didn't want to deal with it because her mechanic told her it was gonna be $2400 to fix it. So instead she bought a new car. Two weeks later after researching vids on Utube here is what needed fixing (I did everything myself except CAT install and yes I tried the gallon of laquer thinner);
1. Replaced knock sensor. (pulled a code regarding this with my trusty Harbor Freight scan tool.) Super easy and only $10 on amazon.
2. Changed spark plugs and wires. (It still puttered a bit after new CATs) She runs quieter than a mouse on cotton now.
3. Changed air filter. It was caked.
4. Sprayed a whole can of sensor safe intake cleaner down the carb. This did a great deal too.
5. Lastly, I changed the oil, inspected and topped off the tranny fluid plus changed the differential fluid.

It seemed to me that the car at 255, 000 miles had not been serviced properly and the nice lady who gave it to me just drove it and didn't do the maintenance on it. Eventually she got overwhelmed with all of the very easy to fix problems (except the CAT which were it not for rusted bolts would be a breeze too) that she gave up on it. Deal of the century my friends. This don't happen often. In the end, for about $700 this Subaru is back to normal, and it could come at a better time. My son is 17 and I was wondering where I was gonna get the cash to get him a safe car. Woo Hoo! I wish I could have had a mint Subaru Forester for my first vehicle. Love, Peace & Hair Grease!

Up here in the north those bolts would be rusted out completely. No way to get a socket on it, let alone break it loose without heat.

Because of this I looked up walker cats and they make them for both my STI and Outback. Good to know as they're both older cars. STI also needs an OEM cat to pass emissions if this HFC doesn't work out.
