I dont understand why people constantly overlap IB with the CFA. Being an active player in this space, the designation is most active in traditional AM roles in PM. If you're younger, I'd suggest you go for the designation. You'll make the time for networking, studying and working. Plus the CFA journey weeds out a lot of undisciplined people quickly.

Its worth getting the CFA later in your career than right away so you have a grasp of what you do well, where your interests are, and you can use it more specifically.

in my country top investment banks, VCs, AM firms actually list CFA1 as a requirement or a plus even for an internship.

CFA here. Honestly only worth if you have a random degree in unrelated subject like chemistry or whatever and want to transition. Also if you’re joining from a different industry. Otherwise honestly, wouldn’t bother.

It’s not worth a lot in investment banking. But in asset management, it might give you an edge.

So the answer is yes it will give you a leg up, unless you plan on staying in entry-level investment banking roles.

Get a CFA if you want something more than an “entry level” career.

Banking and being manager of Funds are different fields. People always get those two mixed up.

im a stock broker. CFA is not needed for my job in deciding which stocks to pick. you just need good common sense, sharp ear and eyes on monitoring changing economy factors around you. but if i am pursuing career in asset management company like bridgewater, vanguard, i would probably take the exam, eventho it is not required. CFA does help in furnishing your resume and stand out among other contestants.

Not a CFA but have the work hours previously in banking, and writing Level 2 next month. Wouldn’t bother if you want to get into Investment Banking right out of school. Focus on interviewing and internships, extra curricular’s such as case comps, and grades with finance major. At most, CFA level 1 in your last year of University if you already have an offer and are a real hardo.

CFA helps if you want to work in a director role in any area of finance/banking, and may be necessary if you want to work in portfolio management. CFA can be great if you don’t work IB hours but want to strengthen your knowledge and resume in addition to your job.

CFA is 100 percent worth it. It open doors for you. Keep applying to bank jobs and you will notice it.

My dad was an MD at a BB. I disagree with you. Getting a CFA is one of the best ways to develop a professional designation in finance, especially for people with otherwise no experience in the field. In fact, most analyst programs will put you through level I in your first year.

Studying CFA worth than going 4-year university.

Networking? Social anxiety... Internships? No experience so won't get hired + can't network! Yup I should have chosen a different degree, I'm totally screwed.

The cfa is 100% worth it. I was working in middle office for 2 years. Wasn’t getting any interviews for the front office no matter how hard I tried. I had a high GPA in college decent internship. Once I passed level one I was getting tons of front office internships in various groups. The CFA is definitely not needed for an investment banking role, but if you want to take the portfolio management, CIO route. I would argue. It’s probably the best thing you could have.

worth it if you're the 1 in a 100 people who will actually succeed in passing the 3 levels before obtaining the CFA. If you're unsure, you're way better doing an MBA and doing internships as the guy in the video's saying

Actually its depend on your country. In indonesia, CFA charter is very respected because only hundred charterholders there versus thousand financial executives needed (country's HRs quality were very low which most of them can't fit the qualification needed). Different from US, where there were thousand charterholders.
