Quantum Physics: The Science Of Reality Explained | Exploring The World Of Quantum Physics | Spark

Professor Jim Al-Khalili traces the story of arguably the most important, accurate and yet perplexing scientific theory ever: quantum physics.

The story of quantum physics starts at the beginning of the 20th century with scientists trying to better understand how light bulbs work. This simple question soon led scientists deep into the hidden workings of matter, into the sub-atomic building blocks of the world around us. Here they discovered phenomena unlike any encountered before - a realm where things can be in many places at once, where chance and probability call the shots and where reality appears to only truly exist when we observe it.

Albert Einstein hated the idea that nature, at its most fundamental level, is governed by chance. Jim reveals how in the 1930's, Einstein thought he'd found a fatal flaw in quantum physics. This was not taken seriously until it was tested in the 1960s. Professor Al-Khalili repeats this critical experiment, posing the question does reality really exist, or do we conjure it into existence by the act of observation?

Elsewhere, we explore how the most famous law of quantum physics – The Uncertainty Principle – is obeyed by plants and trees as they capture sunlight during the vital process of photosynthesis. Could quantum mechanics explain the greatest mystery in biology - evolution?

Jim is a little like a brain enzyme. He deconstructs my brain and reassembles it with a bit more understanding than it started with. I love these programmes.

Wished I would have had an amazing professor like Prof Al-Khalili. My physics prof was a total toad, and really unhelpful. I don't know how I missed this video until recently. Both parts 1 and 2 are utterly fascinating. And why are people giving this a thumbs down, for God's sake???

Dear algorithms, thank you so much for introducing me to Spark!

Jim Al-Khalili is an excellent narrator of Modern Physics apart from being a great scientist. All his videos are excellent.

Thanks Jim for another eye-opening documentary. And congratulations to the whole team: camera, editing, music, location management.

The best way to avoid ads on mobile YouTube:

Drag it till the end of the video, then watch it as a second time😀 now you'll enjoy the video without ads

Jim you really good in explaining complex concepts in a manner that is exciting and easy to understand. Much appreciated.

Heisenberg, Schrodinger and Ohm are in a car
They get pulled over. Heisenberg is driving and the cop asks him "Do you know how fast you were going?"

"No, but I know exactly where I am" Heisenberg replies.

The cop says "You were doing 55 in a 35." Heisenberg throws up his hands and shouts "Great! Now I'm lost!"

The cop thinks this is suspicious and orders him to pop open the trunk. He checks it out and says "Do you know you have a dead cat back here?"

"We do now, asshole!" shouts Schrodinger.

The cop moves to arrest them. Ohm resists.

I too love this guy’s presentation, voice, resonance, knowledge, timing, like ability and genuine curiosity about how fun it is to learn about our natural world. He puts it thank you Dr.J.A.K

Dr. Al-Khalili's science documentaries are the finest ever produced. They have no peer when it comes to presentation, depth of previously uncovered scientific/historic information and sheer (for lack of a better word)...wonder!

Simply mind blowing... Thanks Prof Khalili and all others in the team for this beautiful explanation palatable to laymen like me..

You really do not find videos on this subject but this is the best I have seen or read about. Covers a lot of ground on QM and QI in biology in a manner graspable by a lot of people I expect. I hope you do another.

What an absolute delight of a video..only thing I regret about these two videos(part 1, 2) is 'why I didn't find it earlier'. Definitely following this space now..wow thanks👍👍👍

If they would of presented physics like this while at school I think we would have a lot more people thinking about this stuff for a long part of their life. I'm 40 and just now learning the true nature of everything

Always knew there was something special about Robins. I used to fish a lake at the same spot every time. I met a Robin every time I went and over time it came closer and closer to me as i fed it some of my maggots. Eventually, after about 3 months it used to hop onto my hand and eat the maggot i offered it. I know it was the same bird every time as male Robins are territorial. Feeding this bird made me feel so close to nature and i feel it was one of the highlights of my fishing experiences

This was one of the most outstanding documentaries about quantum physics that I’ve watched in a long time. As a biologist, of course it sparks my interest tenfold. Thank you for such an exciting presentation.

The content is fascinating for sure, but I also have to mention the visuals and scene composition for this doc. Very creative.

In all honesty, I used to abhor physics, but you just struck me at how easy it is for laymen to understand . Not every teacher is a truly creative teacher
