Splice Your Own Double Braid Dock Lines

This How-to video demonstrates how we spliced our own dock or mooring lines from 16mm double-braided line. Our dock lines were getting pretty worn so we bought 26 meters of 16mm black double braided line in bulk, which we cut in half giving us two 13 meter lines. After splicing an eye loop and whipping the ends, we saved a bunch of money and had a lot of fun making our own custom dock/mooring lines. (Whipping rope is not a part of this video, but if you'd like a rope whipping How-to let me know.)

Having the chandler splice our lines would have cost more than the line itself. In the end we spent about 75% less than pre-spliced dock line.

We missed the weather window for an Atlantic crossing in 2020, so we’re trying to stay in the Med-area until November 2021 when the Atlantic crossing weather window returns. We are now sailing in Greece, and we hope you enjoy the video!

Of all the splicing YouTubes, this is by far the best. Hands down.

I agree. there are a lot of good videos but this is my favorite. I really like the fact that you take a moment at each step and lay it all down on the table and show where we are.

Your demonstration and explanation on this splice is the most practical I could find on YouTube. Thank You

Excellent video. A couple more tips. I wear sailing gloves when splicing as I’m a bit lean and can get friction burns when milking the rope. And I use a rubber hammer to soften the junctions as I work. Not so much for this simple splice. But can help when everything gets tight.

Thank you so much for a calm straight forward explanation! I braided 4 eye splices into polypropylene tow rope and they worked perfectly. I got better and faster as I repeated your instructions. I also really like the Selma find set!

Wow- I got to say this kind of blew my mind! I can’t believe how that worked out and … who was the first person on the planet to figure this out!? 😂By the way, Fanny’s your aunt! Cheers mate! 🇬🇧

Great video, I had trouble getting the core back through the neck area and out the outer sleeve, so I tapered the inner core and came out closer to the neck and it worked great.

Excellent video. Best one I’ve watched for making my own line. Bonus points for adding cat footage!

interesting video, thanks for sharing. i have been struggling with making my new dock lines. trying to follow a different method but its a bit different and doesnt allow me to get the fid through. The fid gets stuck near the end. Looking forward to trying this method.
