Dutch is a West Germanic language spoken by about 25 million people as a first language and 5 million as a second language, making it the third most spoken Germanic language. It is the native language in the Netherlands, Flanders (Belgium), and Suriname. Additionally, Dutch is spoken as a second language in the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten. These countries recognize Dutch as an official language and are connected through the Dutch Language Union.
Luxembourgish is a West Germanic language spoken mainly in Luxembourg by about 300,000 people. It is the national language of Luxembourg and is distinct from the German language used in the country, which has its own national standard variety. French, another important language in Luxembourg, influences both Luxembourgish and the national variety of German. Luxembourgish, German, and French are the official languages of Luxembourg.
