As a native Russian speaker, I must say that I don't ever recall a situation when I could not understand another native Russian speaker regardless of where they were from, even if that was an old lady from a small village in the middle of nowhere.

As a Dutch speaker from Belgium I'm always surprised how easy to understand Frisian is for me. If I have it right, this language goes all the way up till the border with Denmark. I read a German book once about a girl from Hannover who moved to the island of Sylt in the far north. Some characters in the book spoke Frisian and the girl had trouble making out what they were saying, but I could make sense of these passages just fine, better than the German text actually. Language is so fascinating.

Fun fact: Plattdeutsch is so far from Hochdeutsch that it is considered as a language of its own. Also, there are many variants of Plattdeutsch itself - some of which I cannot understand, although I grew up with Plattdeutsch. Often, it takes less than 50 kilometers to find a place where you hardly understand the dialect...

The Angelsächsisch part is what I believe to be Old English, or at least very close to it. It was a form of English before the Frenchies messed up the English language lol. There are some Youtubers who post content in Old English, if you speak German and English you can piece together quite a bit of it!

Ich würde sagen, es gibt mehr als hundert deutsche Dialekte, es sind ja allein schon mindestens 5 verschiedene fränkische Dialeggte.

Edit: Grammatikfehler

As someone who can speak the dying Lorraine dialect, I appreciate the inclusion of Letzeburgisch. It is not exactly the same, but closer than any other dialect.
