I would add that God is just as loving in the old testament, think Hosea, and just as harsh as the new testament, think ananais and saphira

i heard my pastor quote someone else saying, if God the Father had come instead of God the Son (Jesus), the story would have been exactly the same. God didn’t love any less in the Old Testament than Jesus did

It is the process of when you become a believer god will chasten him/her... Yes, it is a hard road to walk for the ones he really calls. Me and my mom, have something going when we are both had a hard week, we will say let's suffer together or something like that. There are serious consequences for falling back once you accept Jesus and by picking up the cross, and crucifying your flesh the suffering starts. But just when you can't bear it anymore he will pick it up for you and carry you to safety until you can stand again. Amen... God is good.

Well, the answer to why there is suffering in the world in general is because life is a test, and God wants to see who is going to be good and who's going to be bad when faced with life's challenges....
However I will urge you to give this book a try named, Quran (try the clear quran translation), it's the holy book in Islam. Did you know we as muslims also believe in Jesus(peace be upon him), but as an Almighty Prophet sent by God, we believe in his miracles (there is an additional miracle of Jesus in the Quran) and his miraculous birth, in fact there is a whole chapter on Jesus's mother Mary (peace be upon her) in the Quran
