Making Zirconium Screws!

What's the main difference between making screws out of zirconium versus making them out of titanium? Zirconium is MUCH scarier. And we haven't worked with it since...it does look super cool on fire though.

Enjoy!

At the shop i work at we have sandbags for if titanium or magnesium combust.

Nice video and a shop I'm jealous of. I made some zirconium from an exotic thermite mix around six months ago. I've been looking to purify the stuff for a while now and I've tried a few ways on small samples with limited success. I can dissolve some of the slag away with hot concentrated sodium hydroxide solution, but the corundum slag isn't as prone to attack as pure aluminum sadly. I'm looking into possibly using my vacuum chamber and use plasma and a low pressure argon atmosphere. I've no clue if I can get it to work.

John, would a water/dirt-repellent spray work like Scotchgard™ Heavy Duty Water Shield against the water/oil drops in the maschine.

Make a wiper attached to the door so when you open the door it wipes the coolant off. I did it to my machine and works well.

This is my first visit to this site and after the intro i ask myself how does a young man like you afford a fancy expensive lathe like that so i had to check out your products and WOW! A thousand dollars for a pocket knife! Crazy!

Hey John, Just had a thought watching the lathe footage. Have you considered coating the inside of the windows of the lathe/mill with a hydrophobic coating of some kind? Might make filming through them a little easier if the coolant sheets off. Just a thought! Keep up the good work sir!

Very cool. Trying cleaning the inside of your glass with pledge furniture polish or spray wax. The coolant should just bead off.

Dont blame you for not wanting to do production parts with zirconium. We had a machine burn down from a magnesium fire at work. Even with proper fire extinguisher it still burned a hole right threw the way covers and the heat burned up the control panel.

Don't you just get the feeling that most of Erics's torch time is bong hits vs. heat colouring screws ?

You should put RainX on the inside of your window there

Glad the comments aren’t full of safety sallies. We use a ton of zirc at work (press into explosive warheads for incendiary effect).

What is the actual point of using this material what are the pros?

That zirconium is nasty stuff. Great demo guys!

In a factory that makes tantalum capacitors they use salt to cover over batch in the event of fire, if you brushed the salt off it will reignite!

Zirconium can burn in both nitrogen and hydrogen(!) forming zirconium nitride and zirconium hydride respectively. zirconium hydride is in turn also flammable when it comes in in contact with oxygen. This is why they used zirconium sparklers to burn of excess fuel before engine start when launching the space shuttles.

Titanium chips also burn very intensely. But the hole in the bottom of the machine is easy to repair.

Cool video John thanks for keeping us informed 👊😎BTW Do you ever think you might let someone like Millit or We or my personal favorite Reate do a production version of your knives? I'm sure you get asked that question alot. If so sorry but I had to ask. I just ordered The Gavko / Massdrop Thresher witch I'm very excited about. It seems to me more and more of the higher-end knife makers are doing this so I'm just curious. Oh and very very hopeful. Lol 👍😎 Trevor

Not 100% sure if it would work but would a wax or liqui-pel type coating work to stop the droplets from staying on the top panel? Regardless, love watching these videos, keep it up!

Burning Titanium which was also in your swarf gives off UV apparently, so not recommended. Also, you really should get a chemical extinguisher since you do a lot of Titanium.
