The Thirteenth Doctor revealed - Doctor Who: Trailer - BBC

Jodie Whittaker has been announced as the Doctor Who's 13th Time Lord - the first woman to get the role.

She was revealed in a Doctor Who trailer that was broadcast on BBC One at the end of the Wimbledon men's singles final.

The Broadchurch star succeeds Peter Capaldi, who took the role in 2013 and leaves in this year's Christmas special.

Whittaker, 35, will make her debut on the sci-fi show this Christmas.

It's so strange revisiting this now, with just one episode left of Thirteen's tenure. The Doctor we see here is calm and collected. She's comfortable on her own, one with the world around her, and even in this short clip, she gives off a very real sense of authority. And perhaps most importantly, she has a presence that feels very different to any Doctor we've seen before. Jodie's such a phenomenal actor. Looking back now, with the knowledge of what Thirteen would actually be, this tease just feels like a missed opportunity.

I still wish that this was her outfit in Series 11, 12 and 13. The coat reminds me so much of Jack's; I know she didn't have the TARDIS but I'd love to think that she'd find Jack's old coat in the TARDIS's wardrobe and just starts wearing it because she likes the style.

Why are people talking about the next companion being a male as though this would be a first? The Doctor has already had several male companions in the past. For example, one of the original three companions was William Russell as Ian Chesterton. Unless they're talking about the first male companion to the first female Doctor.

It's sad when you realise how high people's expectations were when this came out. No one thought about how she was written- Chibnall thought that he could get away with weak writing because she was a woman. Upsetting! Especially when she's Space Steve Urkel.
