Skiing is certainly where advanced planning can save a lot of money. For both of the main passes (Ikon and Epic) have multi-day passes that are more flexible and cheaper than buying a multi-day lift ticket at the window (or online) - BUT, you have to purchase before they go off-sale in late fall. With the multi-day passes, this generally works out to be about half the price of multi-day lift-tickets. Additionally, you get the flexibility of choosing different resorts for those days you choose vs being limited to one or a couple resorts for a multi-day lift ticket. You have to be ok with the blockout days but honest, you don't want to be on the slopes during those times anyway - way too crowded.

For those coming from out of state, I have found Spring Break the best time to come visit the Colorado ski resorts. Many resorts actually get _more_ snow in March than January or February. And, any pass you get won't block out the traditional Spring Break weeks. It is the one time of year that kids are out of school, no pass blockouts, and snow is still good. Additionally, March skiing can be significantly less harsh than the colder months - as you might be skiing in just above/below freezing temps near the base areas, it will still be pretty cold on top (layer up).

But, for those of us planning to ski more than 3 days, then the Ikon base or Epic Local passes really shine. Especially when you consider that same-day window tickets can be $250+ per day per person (Vail, Breck, Aspen, Beaver Creek, Steamboat).

For those that like to travel around and plan to ski all winter and spring, the main Ikon and Epic passes are worth the premiums since it opens up more resorts and removes any blockouts.

If you live in Colorado, I recommend buying used equipment instead of renting _or_ consider doing season-long rentals. Daily rentals are going to run you $30-60 per day, depending on the area. You can rent for the entire season for $200-$300.
