Forza Horizon 5 is an absolute spectacle. That’s easy to see. But there are some things the game doesn’t tell you early on, that I absolutely wished I knew early on. Like, how can you upgrade the fast travel option, how exactly do the game’s three progression systems work? These are just a couple of the questions I hope to answer in this video. But don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a video of advanced tips on how to win the game’s toughest races. It’s more of a beginners guide for people just starting out, or feeling overwhelmed by everything this awesome game has to offer. And with that out of the way, here are the best tips and things I wish I knew before starting Forza Horizon 5.

Progression
One of the more confusing parts of Forza Horizon 5 for me early on was how you earn progression. There are actually three progression tracks. One for how you earn skill points to upgrade vehicles. One for how you earn experience points to earn new cars and in-game currency. And one for how you unlock story missions. Let’s start with how you unlock story missions. This is done by earning Accolade Points which are rewarded by completing any of the tasks posted in the game’s accolades menu. By the way, if you press the A button to select any accolade that requires you to complete a specific race or event, you’ll pin it’s location, which will create a driving line leading you directly to where you can earn that accolade. Anyhow, each accolade rewards you with a certain number of points, which are then tallied in the top right of the pause menu. When you have points enough to unlock a new story mission, you can then go to the game’s Horizon Adventure menu to decide which story mission to experience next.
Next, let’s look at Experience Points. These are earned by doing just about anything in the game, from smashing XP boards to discovering new areas to completing events. You’ll get on-screen notifications when you earn experience and when you eventually level up, you’ll earn a wheel spin. These are basically loot boxes, but not to worry, the rewards are usually worthwhile, typically a new car or a significant amount of in-game currency. BTW, if you’re wondering what level you are, it’s displayed at the top left of the pause menu next to your username. Ok, what about the third progression track? Well as you drive around, you’ll rack up what’s called your skill score. More on this later, but for now, just know that you’re rewarded a score for driving around basically like a maniac. When you finally fill up this yellow tire meter, you’re rewarded with a skill point, which you can then spend to unlock perks and upgrades to any one of your cars. So that’s how progression works in Forza. I wish the game did a better job of explaining these three tracks, but if you’re new to Forza and you’re as confused as I was, at least at first, I hope this helped.

Unlock The Ability to Fast Travel Anywhere
Another thing I feel Forza Horizon 5 does a lousy job of explaining is the fast travel system. Before I explain how to unlock the ability to fast travel to any location on the map, let me first explain how to fast travel at the start of the game. Early on, you can only fast travel to any of the game’s seven houses you’ve purchased, or any Festival Outpost you’ve unlocked by progressing through the campaign. But what I missed and took an embarrassingly long time to discover, was the subtle prompt at the bottom of the screen to press the x button to fast travel. Yeah, I’m sure this was obvious to a lot of you, but I just didn’t see it and I can’t imagine I’m the only one. Anyways, this will cost you some in-game credits, but if you smash through fast travel signs, that cost will continue to drop. Ok, now for what you’ve been waiting for. How do you unlock the ability to fast travel to any road on the map? Well, the house appeared on my map after I finished the Guanajuato Expedition, which is the first story mission in the Street Scene festival.

Top Tip: If you buy all of the clothing options in “Customise Your Character” then they won’t appear in your Wheelspins/Super Wheelspins. This way you limit what clothes do appear to the ones locked which are far, far, less ones to turn up on Wherlspins thus increasing the chances of spinning up cars and cash.

Overwhelming is the right word. The start is like ADHD made in a game
“Hey that was a great race, how about you try another….wait no do this instead, hey here’s an accolade award…. Quick go do this NOW!”

Another HUGE tip is if you don’t have Fast Travel unlocked yet, you can just go to Rivals and it will teleport you to the race you select. So you can say, go to Rivals>Drag Races> Airport Strip and quit out and you’ll be at that location for Free. I hope this helps some people and ty for the video!

Almost nothing of this was evident, I was really lost in the game after a couple of hours. Thank you very much.

By the way: you can smash all 50 fast travel boards hidden around the map (I watched a YouTube video to find all of them) you can fast travel for free. Adding this with the fast travel house and you can travel to any road on the map FOR FREE. This saves a lot of money over time. It definitely adds up so I’d say it’s worth the grind.

I'm only 4 minutes into this video and I've learned more than I have playing the game for like 10 hours. 😂 Thanks, man!

FH5 is amazing but at the same time, there's no denying that it's a confusing mess for the first few hours. Don't know why they didn't include a tutorial but thankfully videos like this one cover that gap. Thanks!

For the drifting portion of this video it helps to mention some difficulty settings that will help a ton to drift, but will take some getting used to. Switch traction control and stability control to OFF, it will help get into and maintain a drift. If you also switch your shifting to manual instead of automatic that will be a big help, the higher the revs the easier it is to drift. The last thing is drift suspension and drift tire with high hp, it will help a ton even if you don't tweak the advanced tune settings. Hope these tips help!

Some more tips for learning how to drift: firstly turn off traction control in the assists menu, if your goal is to lose traction, turning this off goes a long long way. Another tip is to download a drift tune for a car that someone has made, these have had heavy changes to the suspension, gears, tires and differential to make it so much easier to drift with. Finally, any car can become a drift car with the right tune, but I still recommend starting with jdm cars, they a fan favourites for a reason and will all become amazing, well balanced drift cars.

Great video! I would like to share 2 tips that found myself very useful:

1) about knocking difficulty placed XP/Fast travel boards. You just select a fast car, find a near hill, and then if you missed the XP board, you just use the Rewind option (Y button on xbox controller) until you tune the exact speed/turn to hit the board ;)

2) For barn finds, the easiest way is to drive until the finding area, and then enter Drone mode, it's way easier to find it, especially when there are a lot of trees!

Thank you so much for this video! FH5 is my very first FH. You're just thrown in this biiiggg world without any clue what to do - and there are so unbelievable many options what do do and where to go. The game should definitely explain all that stuff (at least optionally for new players)

Pro Tip for drifting: go to settings, select difficulty, then turn off traction control and stability control. It's VERY difficult if you don't and super easy when you disable those settings. Lots of people also say to disable automatic shifting but with traction and stability disabled I haven't found disabling automatic shifting necessary. A LOT of people miss this simple fix for drifting.

This game has blown me away! I'm not a racing fan outside of Mario Kart, and yet because FH5 is on Game Pass I thought I'd give it a shot. I think I have close to 20 hours played in three days! I can't stop!!!

I just started this video and just heard you say these are the things you wish you knew when starting the game.
This is Exactly what I'm looking for.
I just bought it and don't know what's best to start with.
Thank you for your time and tips.

Like others have said, the best way to learn drifting is to grab an rwd car with a decent amount of power. Locking the diff will make it way easier to break the tires loose without using the handbrake

I've logged just over 200 hours of game play on horizon5 and this video had a couple things I didn't know. Good content, thank you

Another tip is to download tunes for your cars! You can download other players tunes and it will completely change how the cars handle and make you way faster! You can also download tunes specific to 1 area like drifting, offroading, corning/grip, to suit what you want the car to do.

Really good video, you earned a sub. As a horizon player since forza horizon 2, this video was still very informative video and has helped me understand this somewhat knew format of the series
