after the wall fell in 89 I argued with the 80+ year old Estonian father of a friend that Russia had permanently changed for the better. he laughed at me and said *never trust Russians* How prescient he was.

The Baltics show and teach us what is the best in Europe: its VALUES. Pragmastism. courage, being grounded, honest, clear. On the Good Side of History. As hungarian, I am ashamed of my country's underperformance in all these aspects. Glory to Ukraine!

Would be the worst decision ever of the megalomaniac mouse in the Kremlin. We must see the economic, technological and military “power” of Russia in perspective. Russia is indeed a huge country in square km, but only has (a declining) 144 million inhabitants (Mexico 128 million, Japan 123 million, Indonesia 270 million). This is about 30% of USA or Eurozone. The GDP of Russia however is only 4% of the GDP of the Eurozone + USA, this is equal to the GDP of the small countries Belgium + Netherlands + Luxembourg. And less than the GDP of the state of California. Relatively (per capita) the GDP of Russia is very low. Beside that the economy of Russia has signs of a 3th world economy. Half of the income is coming from oil & gas. Based on this, Russia isn’t a world power. And for sure, it isn’t a economic power. This is the reason they can’t build up and maintain a big army. The army they have is far beyond normal proportions in relation to their GDP. This hurts their budgets and prosperity permanently. In this perspective, Russia is a mouse with a huge superiority complex and dangerous megalomaniac dreams. The path the mouse chose will be its downfall.

Russia didn't win against Germany - the Soviet Union did with the help of US and the UK. It was US lend lease that provided Stalin with military equipment.

Everyone always thinks bad things happen to others. Or they try to rationalise the horrible actions by assuming that the victim played some part in the actions of the perpetrators. That is was within their control and that it was because of something they did odid not do.
They cannot accept that some actions are irrational and that the perpetrator is the problem. Instead they make these excuses for the perpetrators because they hope that they limit their barbarity to others and that they are spared. Such barbarity gone unanswered feeds the perpetrators and gives them confidence . It reassures them that they are in the right path and even cements their idea of superiority because what is a person or group or nation that does not have the courage and strength to oppose such egregious acts.
All nations will pay a price for russias victory.

Iniitally, they said they want Russia back to the 1991 borders. Now the reality is sinking in and Ukraine will clearly lose territory. So victory is being redefined again.

Ukraine will win. It took Afghanistan 10 years, they won. It took Japan many tries until they won. Ukraine gained its freedom from Russia one before. It will do so again if it must. Russia will lose. Russia has already lost more than this war. It has lost a whole generation and will continue too to lose.

The only question worth asking is how much is an alliance with US, Canada-Uk-France, Germany (etc)really worth? So far I would say trust in us as "cautious"
