Sure it's genius, anyone with ears should be able to tell that. You always hear people comment on Bill's gorgeous and unique harmonic approach, his deep lyricism, his emotional depth and taste - I don't hear people focus enough on his rhythmic individuality, it's so compelling, his displacement of phrases, etc. Bill Evans is the total package - melody, harmony and rhythm - he covers it all, makes it his own, and tells a meaningful, human story (he's a poet). People try to copy certain aspects of his sound, but there will only be one Bill Evans. Still, what he created is something that other serious players can explore and find their own individuality through making their own discoveries, using Bill's music as a jumping off point. Bill Evans is the gift that keeps giving, he's a musical treasure.

There was always a transcendent aspect to Bill's playing -- which regularly for over sixty years has drawn me back to it for spiritual sustenance.

Brings back wonderful memories of all those nights I spent at the Village Vanguard listening to Bill's masterful creations. There's never been anything else like it.

This is so gorgeous. Brings tears to my eyes about the power of music. This man was so special. We are blessed to have his music to listen to forever.

The greatest compliment a pianist could be made is that he plays the piano as it was meant to be. This is what was said of Bill Evans.

Just focus your mind for a second and realize how much practice he must have done to be this fluent and inventive and the sacrifices he must of made for his music.

The memories that come back to me with Bill’s music is crazy. It’s like a trigger to memories and good times of my youth.

Portrait in Jazz was released the year before I was born so I was hearing Bill Evans from birth basically. This is one of my favorite recordings. I have listened to it thousands of times. I've followed with the transcriptions, and I'm always delighted at how I feel after hearing this entire piece. In 2022 I started looking for interviews and found a lot of them on YouTube. Bill's life wasn't easy but his undying appreciation for excellence and his ultimate humility has given me a new kind of appreciation for his art. Thanks for posting!

My favourite changes, like ever. Evans propel-kicks it forward into new dimensions, as always.

I'm glad to say I was alive when Mr. Evans was. Though it was only ten days. I always wished to see him live. Sadly, it's not happening. Great pianist.

I LOVE this. Total improv showing the moment with each hand having different conversations.

One of the best tunes ever written. Bill has played it every way, and this is the freshest take yet. He makes that mechanical monster express his innermost feelings--with a tone and touch so personal it's never been equaled. The piano in his enormous hands (thick but dead-accurate fingers) becomes a voice capable of sadness, joy, reflection, excitement, overbearing intensity. And his best piano playing, imo, is on the 16 CDs he recorded a week before his death--in San Francisco, on "the Last Waltz" and "Consecration." With his last trio (1979-1980), Bill really took command, expressing his compositional and piano voice fuller than at any other time of his life. And the audio of the piano makes the instrument thunder and ring.

Fresh and unique version of a standard that has been done a zillion times. Evans always added his own genius to everything.

This performance has the same expansiveness and breadth as Evans' "Your Story, " recorded at the Keystone Corner shortly before Bill died. Total reflection on a WHOLE BIG LIFE. It's simultaneously Sad, but also very GRAND.
