That is exactly how I’ve learned my whole life. It gets boring and fast forward a year I’m not even playing what I started with anymore with how many changes I’ve quietly made along the way.

The part I hate Is when people love my sound but I don’t enjoy it anymore because I am so used to it.

This is what practicing is all about. Wood sheddin'. Carving in marble. I can play one fun piece under most any circumstance. These legends worked out the kinks on hundreds of tunes through repetition!

Best piano advice I’ve heard in a long time .

This is such a fascinating perspective! Im a self-taught pianist; I play by ear and I dont read sheet music. I also have ADHD, so I get burned out really easily. I never wanted to lose interest in playing piano, so I have always song-hopped to avoid feeling that boredom you described at all costs. When I want to learn a new song, I will actually learn multiple songs. I play a chunk of it on repeat to build muscle memory, up until I get tired of hearing it, and then I immediately start learning a chunk of something entirely different. The moment I feel like I might be losing interest, I switch back, or just play something else. This strategy keeps me from burning out, and I feel like I get the most enjoyment out of playing because it never feels like work. I admire the discipline it takes to play something over and over, though. I certainly don't have that kind of patience 😂

I haven't practicied obsessively in years, but i am a classically trained pianist, and i would practice the same piece for 4-6 hours, sometimes the rare morning-to-night session.

Yep true. It's a form of ear training and getting to know the instrument better, plus inspiring greater creativity and musical vocab.

That´s so true. By playing the same piece over and over, you end up discovering which parts work for you or not.

there's one more important benefit to that approach, way more than creativity. if focused properly, your mind starts shifting towards all the previously ignored parts of your practice sessions

Totally agree. I’ve been only practicing C Jam Blues for 2 years now.

This makes so much sense and it justifies everything I’ve done in the past with my piano sessions. I’ve only been playing for two years and just the other day I spent four hours playing mostly just one piece. It is such a beautiful process.

Something cool about this, is that one of the roots of jazz is brass bands playing the same tunes over and over again. So they started embellishing. From boredom comes creativity!

I like to accent different notes and change it up each bar and bring out different flavours of melody. Theres infinite possibilities

When producing, people got annoyed with me listening to the same chorus loop for an hour or two but that’s where the ideas of variation came from

Also, if you play something over and over like that, you really internalize the changes and harmony. And then you start noticing similarities with the harmony of other songs, especially with jazz and classical. It's a great way to make music like second nature to you. 10, 000 hours, or whatever they say. That's how you get good.

Thank you for sharing that that really helps me a lot with practicing the same thing over and over I've noticed that a song I'm working on I'm actually starting to do different variations because I'm playing it over and over❤
