House Democrats introduced a draft proposal called the Puerto Rico Status Act which would allow Puerto Ricans to vote on the island's political status. If passed, the bill would hold Congress to any binding result that Puerto Ricans move forward, including U.S. statehood.

While AOC may be of Puerto Rican descent, it’s misleading to call her a “Puerto Rican congresswoman” as that would imply she’s a representative of Puerto Rico.

May the people of Puerto Rico get whatever status they choose.

Puerto Rico was already a part of Spain not a colony when the United States invaded Puerto Rico. We weren't freed or saved like USA propaganda implies. Usa made our flag illegal and tried to change our islands name to Porto Rico because they couldn't pronounce it. USA also tried to change our language an imposed their own Governers to rule the island until the 1950s. Also gave us USA citizenship 1 month before USA declared war in WW1 and for what reason? you guessed it we got drafted and have fought every war they have being in since WW1 and we are still look down on. 61, 000 Puerto Ricans fought in the Korean war and fought bravely and brought home 8 medals of honor on that war alone. People in the USA don't know crap and barely even know their own history. While under Spanish rule, Puerto Rico fought alongside the American colonists in the Revolutionary War. Bernardo de Galvez, the governor of Louisiana in 1779, was named general of the Spanish colonial army and led his troop -- consisting primarily of Puerto Ricans and other Hispanics -- to capture the cities of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Mobile, Alabama; Pensacola, Florida; and St. Louis, Missouri, from the British. We deserve better and can do better without their shackles.
EDIT
Info for people that commented and think I'm a liar or people giving misinformation.
Puerto Rico USA citizenship 3/2/1917- USA declared war 4/6/1917 WW1
Puerto Rico became a province of Spain in 1868-1897 when it became the first autonomous province of Spain 1897-1898 when we got invaded by USA.
USA had their eyes on Puerto Rico for a while. they tried to buy it in 1869 from Spain and they also tried to buy Cuba in 1854.

It’s interesting to think about if the decision for Puerto Rico, weather it becomes a state or independent, will set a precedent for the other US territories, i.e Guam, Virgin Islands, American Samoa.

As a Puerto Rican living in Puerto rico the best move for the island is to remain the way it is. Puerto Ricans would be insane to vote to independence because they would lose American citizenship I am voting statehood

I’m all for this and as well as for other territories as well Guam Mariana Islands US Virgin Islands and American Samoa. But I think it’s important that residents of these territories are educated with what the implications would be if they become independent or a state what benefits they gain but what they also lose as well

Well… this was a surprise, but a welcome one. I’ve been hoping for this. May the people in Puerto Rico get what they want! Regardless of the outcome, I hope we maintain good relations.

Puerto Rico would be a swing state at best as the island is very religious and not necessarily a shoe in to be a blue state if PR becomes a state. Puerto Ricans fight for us in our wars and our tax dollars go to this island so it's time. They are citizens too.

They should have only 2 options: Independence or Statehood. Th other option is the "present colonial condition".

If they're paying taxes they deserve the same rights as everyone else.

Let the people of Puerto Rico choose what they want. In my opinion the federal government has not did enough to help the people of Puerto Rico. My prayers and my heart goes out to my people on the island.

The senate will never let Puerto Ricans decide their own fate. Whatever bill they pass they will always make sure that the Puerto Ricans never win, because they will always interfere with whatever the Puerto Ricans want by manipulating any result to benefit the U.S.A. senate. We can survive by ourselves, and we have the land to do the farming to survive, and anyway, if the situation continues to escalate the way is going with the U.S.A. it will have no choice but to let us go because the U.S.A. won't be able to maintain the country and the only thing they can do is let us go and place sanctions on us so we won't be able to develop and to grow as a country. Remember that Spain stole the land from us, and then the U.S.A. stooled from Spain and here we are trying to get it back peacefully. We are the only one that can deal with all those Spanish speaking countries and make peace with them on behalf of the U.S.A. and on behalf of peace. steeling is a crime, no matter how you look at it!

This is welcome news. Please be sure to write to your Senators to support this important step toward freedom. Regardless of results, let the people who have stuck it out on the island choose.

I pray it becomes a state so we could offer more help to them, I love Puerto Rico and some of the greatest loving people i have met have been from Puerto Rico! Praying for the best outcome

I think it would be cool if puerto rico became the 51st state, They already pay US taxes and are considered us citizens I believe, they would just have an actual say in what goes on in america if the bill were passed and they voted to become a state

Unfortunately, I don't think the Bill would pass the Senate, as many do not want (or is not convenient) for PR to become a state or a free country.

The good ole US of A. We no longer have anything to prove to Mother England. These are people. FYI, people are no longer property. Hear their wishes, whatever they may be, with an honest bipartisan intent to honor them. Take them outta limbo. 🇵🇷

I find it incredible that there is still colonialism in the 21st century and then ' USA ' talks about " freedom and democracy ".

Fun fact we had a vote years ago and we voted to become a state but was vetoed by the governor.
