Cool project! I would recommend you to use stepper motors like the 28BYJ-48 ones. You will be able to get much more precision and stability. Also, you can use the AccelStepper library in Arduino for controlling the stepper motors.

If you want stability, you must move its center of gravity as low as possible. The weight being on the top is about the worst position for it.

Roughly how much force can that exert? I'm hoping to use a similar setup for a quadripedal walking robot. It'll have to be very lightweight.

the formula in the traceline function doesn't look very much like Bresensham's algorithm. can you explain the "over" variable?
