Gustavo Dudamel - Márquez: 'Fandango' (LA Phil with Anne Akiko Meyers)

In August 2021, Anne Akiko Meyers joined Gustavo and the LA Phil for the world premiere of composer Arturo Márquez’ new violin concerto, “Fandango,” which is based on the Mexican dance Márquez grew up with. Listen to the final movement performed at the Hollywood Bowl.

Everyone is going on about the fantastic maestro, BUT, Anne Akito Meyers is SUPERB. This is violin playing at its finest, her technique, fingering, bowing, is out of this world. She never lets up from the first chord, her fingers must be made of steel. Unbelievable. Composition, musician, musicians and maestro. Pure and utter delight.

I was privileged to be in the audience that night. Due to the pandemic aftermath, the box seats were always available at the Bowl that season. I managed to snag an entire box to myself 5 rows back dead center. What a remarkable performance by Ms. Myers and the entire orchestra. Gustavo has opened my eyes to the wonders of Latin American music when I first heard the LA Phil perform Marquez's Dancon #2.
