Dual clutch transmission users - take note!

Dual clutch transmissions (DSG/DCT etc) are not at all happy when you crawl (creep) in traffic. This is more deadly when it's on an incline. This results in excessive clutch slip and leads to premature wear of the clutches. I'm so glad I have a torque converter auto!

All dual clutch users, loud music can destroy your gearbox 😂😂😂

When in slow traffic, put the gearbox into M1 & try not to creep as much as possible, let the car in front move up a few meters then gently apply gas to move forward (keep feeding gas). Don't release the brake & not applying gas letting the car to creep forward by itself. (This is what kills DCT eventually)

I drive a dsg VW Passat. In heavy traffic, I just put it into manual mode, let the car in front move a few meters/feet away from me, then keep it in 1st and apply gas. Car is 5 years old with over 100, 000 on it and dsg works perfectly. Seems to work fine. The reason I started doing this was because I notice in stop start traffic the car would select second gear almost immediately then it would slip the clutch constantly until about 20 kmh, I decided that can't be good.

It’s one of the main reasons BMW stopped using DCTs, and went with the ZF 8HP. The only DCT I’ve driven that works perfectly in heavy traffic is Acura’s 8-Speed DCT. I found out it actually has a torque converter to smooth out all shifts

Driving with a manual in traffic is no different. Clutch wear happens when creeping traffic. I keep my DSG in manual mode in first gear.

Set distance to max. This prevents the constant clutch slipping in 2nd gear, since the car goes fast enough to fully engage in 2nd. And if you're going slower thatn 10km/h, put in manual mode and select 1st gear. If it's time to shift, you'll hear it lol, or you'll see revs above 3000.

In intense traffic i use manual mode. To avoid the continuous gears changing after two meters

Well duh. Thats what kills a manual too. Its really easy to notice when the dct is riding the clutch. As far as i know for all of them anything under 5-7mph and it rides the clutch. Also in stop and go dont leave it in sport mode. It will ride the clutch even more

Hello gli owner with the DQ250 DSG

One trick I’ve found helpful is not to creep soon as someone lets off the brakes that way you have more space to cover when you do move

I was looking to buy a Cupra Ateca, but knew dual clutch gearboxes have constant issues and need service more often, oil changes, etc. That's why I went with a 6AT torque converter on my Sportage GT Line instead of the 7dct they were offering on the gasoline engines. And because the Cupra Ateca is 25k euros, I will just go ahead and buy a Jaguar F-Pace 3L supercharged which is priced between 25-28k and uses the 8 speed ZF torque converter

Everything with a clutch doing very slow speeds will half-clutch and kill the clutch eventually

I like the acura 8 speed dct since it uses a TC as well. Perfect for these types of situations

Not really. The creeping mode fully engages the clutch, there's no slipping. It can get hot if you're not on even surface, though.

problem is that all the other idiots don't care / don't know... so they just keep kreeping forward in a fucking slow way it's to fast to stop but to slow to drive past the clutch bitepoint...

Just got my first DCT car (2024 Kia Forte GT) and learning to drive in heavy traffic is just the same as a normal manual transmission give some distance before you move. I wonder how much better the wet DCT's are in traffic.

The thing DCT users don’t do which I don’t understand is they the keep it in first to creep forward why not tap the gas then leave it in neutral let it roll forward and repeat

Im curious as i have a modern dct car with e brake theres a feature called auto hold will that be perfectly fine to use and not damage anything?

In asian countries we use chinese car equipped with dct. most cars are around (100k km) without any clutch slipped and the transition of the shift is damn good.
1- proper change with synthetic fluid.(40k km)
2- Use Manual mode

If only there was a better solution (there is and they're called torque converter transmissions)

New A3 uses a 1.5 with a 8speed torque converter
