My great grandma, who died last year at 99, was living in Germany when ww2 broke out. She watched her father die and mother taken away. She stole from nazi camps to survive and somehow managed to get to the usa before going to Canada. There, they were very poor and her and my great grandfather worked tirelessly for my grandma until one day, my great grandmother fell through their cardboard roof and destroyed her back, making it hard for her to walk ever again. When she fled Germany, she lost all contact with her family and it’s possible her mom was alive after ww2.

Edit: i told this story because our last name is Murphy but hers was different during ww2
