Developing entrepreneurial spirit and skills in our communities matters far more than hand-wringing about patents, venture capital, economic development dollars, or other metrics. People are the real power behind economic growth and by cultivating a culture of possibility, motivated people will attract the resources needed to make things happen. Patents, VCs, and even economic development money tend to follow big ideas and the people willing to make them happen, not lead them. And there is just as much innovation to be done through small businesses, community organizations, and existing institutions as there is with technology-driven startups or large corporations. Everyone can solve a problem. Everyone can keep challenging themselves. Everyone can build a team to make something bigger happen.

Devin Morgan is an executive mentor to innovative businesses, as well as a patent attorney, economic development professional, and craft food & beverage geek. He lives in Cooperstown, NY and started Three Blazes Innovation, Inc. to spread the word about the power of entrepreneurship and the importance of innovation at every level of business. He is also Special Counsel to Hoffman Warnick, an intellectual property law firm based in Albany, NY, and a Board Member of Otsego Now, the Otsego County IDA.
