If you can run flat out, as they did in this race, lane 8 is the fastest lane of a 400m race because it is the straightest. That's why the fastest time ever, from lane 8, is 43.03 while the fastest time ever, from lane 1, is 44.25 (coincidentally set in this same race). That lane 1 "fastest" time is the slowest of any lane. Of course, if you need to see a runner in front of you to motivate you, it's the worst lane. All runners run 400m no matter what lane they're in.

At 12years old 2000 in Melbourne Olympics park cbc college i ran 400m in 47.04 first 100m 10.04sec second 100m 9.03sec third 100m 10.04sec fourth 100m 17sec. I pull a gramp 90m left to the finished line
