The smart phone killed the camera among casual shooters. Only serious shooters use high end cameras anymore.

A theme park, people are mostly taking pictures just for memories about their trip, so phones are the way to go.

When I go to a wildlife area, I see loads of photographers.

Fact of the matter is that modern smartphones take great pictures. Sure; you can zoom in and pixel peep and point out the superior image quality of a "real" camera, but smartphones offers instant gratification and convenience. Even those of us who shoot with ILC's also occasionally use smartphones for the reasons mentioned above.

Phones are just not up to snuff (yet). People got sold a line about mega-pixels and they've swallowed it hook line and sinker. Met a guy the other day with Xiaomi 13 phone that has a 50 mega-pixel camera in it. He thought it would be better than my 24 mega-pixel K3 II. A few test shots later - not so much. It was good, but the resolution, dynamic range and color rendition could not touch the pentax with a FA 50/1.4 on it I should have bet him money.

My thoughts are similar.
A couple of points, as long as we have walls in our houses, we can still fill them with images.
Modern mirrorless cameras will probably survive purely as video cameras, a resurgence of home movies, perhaps. 😅
Drone cameras seem to be the next big thing?
They do make for some magic documentary shows.
Will never part with my Pentax gear, optical viewfinder perfection, although a Canon r8 should make the wildlife hunt a little easier.

It seems to me that niche cameras are the way things are going. That and the high end gear catering towards pros. The entry level market is probably more aimed towards social media content creators? Obviously smart phones have had a huge impact.

I tend to think photography is the opposite of dead.

As much as I never use my smartphone for taking pictures, they've made it even easier than ever for people to take photos. I think of smartphones as evolved point-and-shoots, to be honest. I mean, there was a time when either, you got a disposable, or a family member had a decent camera. Now, EVERYONE has a camera.

It's become so much more accessible than it ever was, and everyone is taking photos.

Bought a Lumix FZ 1000, excellent condition, for $250. A little later, a GH5 for $275. Still much less expensive than a new phone with all the latest update bombardments. I know there are better cameras out there, but they all do the same things in different ways, within their class ranges. My buddy, a well experienced photog, raves about his high end Sony cameras, which he struggled to pay for. The picture qualities and features of my Panasonics easily give his cameras a run for the money. And there lies the point. The money and quality. Ultimately, the best critics are those who look at pictures, not caring who shot or what was used to get it. And yes, There are those who do look at pictures carefully and care about the cameras used. I joined that group a few years ago after writing and publishing a novel, writing a good script, finding a Panasonic DVX AG200 for $1500, and began making a movie. None of it is easy, but my fun lies in spending where I don't have to. Now I can afford to pay my actors! By the way, last year I saw, on Amazon, a DVX AG200 for $3999. Go figure.

It's a crying shame, thinknof all the film processing outlets that have gone, since digital arrived along with mobile phone cameras

A good smartphone camera is like a Yashica T4. Every shot comes out nicely but you have no control, especially with AI a current phone won't even allow scene selection or fake depth-of-field control

I'm a lot less interested in normal size images than I was. These days I like using my Hasselblad 500CM and other medium format cameras, or my Large Format cameras, of which I have several, including a hand made panoramic one I bought new that wasn't cheap and does take different lenses.

You know I'm sitting here on the sofa and my Pentax K-5II there in front of me on the coffee table. I keep it there in case a photo opportunity comes up. (Birds of prey often perch on the fence) It's there but I hardly even pick it up anymore. I guess I need motivation?

Dslr will be a niche hobby product now. Phones even mid range phones can take incredible shots with the improvement in Ai you really do get good results

Cellphones is what the every day person is using now.

I think people that are really into photography as a hobby or are pro are still guying DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras.

We'll see how good the new DJI/Huawei camera is when it comes out. I'm hoping it combines an interchangeable lens camera with smartphone computational tech, if it works well, that might be the change that's needed if other companies step up their game as well. If phones can do 7+ second handheld exposures with no blur, why can't regular cameras do at least 1 to 2 second handheld exposures?

I went to Europe in June 2022 i was with a group for week in Italy I had my Pentax K3-11 and one other person in the group had a interchangeable lens camera a Cannon DIgital camera she had gotten fir a graduation gift for graduating from college everybody else used cellphones so I was already well aware of the trend away from cameras
The only place I regularly see interchangeable lens cameras is at the local wetlands for bird photography where I photographed a Pargion Falcon perched in a tree the last time I there couple of weeks ago I had another photographer point out the bird to me

Photography is not dead. The tools of photography has changed. Why spend a lot of money on a camera that does one thing, take photos, when a smartphone does much more? Plus, the price of a camera has become ridiculous. Camera manufacturer's don't put all their best tech in one camera. They hold back some for the next model to suck you into buying a new one. Camera manufacturer's are hurting themselves.

For good image quality you a camera. If you only interested to see something on a little screen, use a smartphone.

Well, phones replaced cameras for those who only ever bought kits, now they don’t need them because (a) it’s online instantly (b) no post processing required (c) they don’t print large or at all (d) phones are a lot smaller and travel friendly (e) snapshots are still snapshots.

I carry a small fujifilm x-t30 every day because I can see the difference between large print from an iPhone vs a camera. My wife sees no difference and actually impressed with the iPhone print, and I can’t forgive myself I didn’t have a camera for that picture when I took it.

Also, only Fujifilm understands that consumer cameras have to look great and be compact. The rest keep producing bulky consumer unfriendly cameras. How such heavy bricks can compete with phones? Only gas addicts like us are actually interested in those 😅

You know, I love photography I've made prints from my D90, K10d and my Samsung S20. I just love bouncing back and forth between them. I for one really hop things turn around because like all of you I don't plan on stopping.
