Is Photography Already Dead

So I wanted to talk about the advancements in cameras to the point that some people do not learn the settings of the camera and let it take the pictures for them. Since cameras have come so far this will work to a certain point. Should people learn how a camera works and what makes a photo special?

Photography isn’t dead, but for a lot of people the reason they shoot is dead and they let it die. Alfred Stiglet said it’s better to click with people then to click your camera. We forget that Photography is the method we use to collect memories and to share adventures. Photography is not an end to itself is a very technical and sometimes boring field. It’s time to grab your camera and go have an adventure go collect a memory go find that moment that takes your breath away and share it with others. That is the heart of Photography.

I'm 25 & I've been doing photography as my Hobby/ Freelance... for almsot 10 yrs. I use Manual everytime, I do it all myself... I hate that photography now a-days is all Photoshop, Lightroom, or A.I... I kinda like the Old-school I guess.

I take the time to learn my camera settings, I dont crop or put a filter on my photos... I enjoy the challenge of taking a photos with the Manual settings, seeing what settings work on ny own, and the originality of the photo.

Some people take photos and some of us create images!

For me personally, photography is about capturing a moment in time, holding on to a memory and keeping or sharing it, to look back on and remember those adventures, places or people etc

It's not all about settings, aperture, lighting and all the technical aspects.

But hey, I'm no pro photographer, I'm just a hobbyist and online photography creator.😊

Great vlog. You are so right about people picking up cameras and just shooting on auto. I have been doing photography as a hobby for quite a few years and still don’t feel confident enough to actually start putting up videos on the topic.
On the other hand film photography is picking up and if you don’t know shutter speed, iso and aperture etc proper film photography would be a struggle.

I don't make photography videos but I love the insights on photography. My wife and I just picked up photography as something to do together and we've been learning how to use manual. I know these cameras can do a lot in auto but there's no "uniqueness" to it. Learning the manual settings to use in certain situations or achieving a certain look is what makes photography fun in my opinion. Also, I love the neon sign at the end of the video, I need to figure out how to make that lol

I certainly hope photography is not dead. I was concerned in the 90's when I was taking photography courses at a college and was using film and one of my photography instructors sold all his equipment for digital and I had just purchased a medium format film camera and paid a lot of money. No, he said, it will be years before that happens, but within a few years, film and film cameras became more rare and I switched over to digital. I've had to get use to processing, editing my own photos using Lightroom and on a terminal. Now retired, I'm hopeful to get back into photography in a big way, and AI has come out and it too threatens photography among other art forms too. Coupled with iPhones taking almost perfect photos, its all enough to make you numb. Still, it is an art form and you require skill, knowledge and experience to take photos.

I don’t think photography is dead. I think it is evolving. It just may require less skill because the gear is doing all the work.

I sure wonder. When I see thousands of people liking phone sunsets with crooked horizons and unrealistic saturation and vibrancy, and even asking the poster if they can get a print made for their wall, I start doubting the future of photography. I’m over here shooting great compositions at 102Mp, and printing on 44” archival paper with archival inks, yet the photo printed on aluminum with no compositional thought and looks like it was colored with a box of primary colored crayons is walking away with accolades. It’s not just about AI. On the fine art side, people have changed. They’ve viewed tens of thousands of images on Instagram and Facebook, and their eyes and tastes have become trained for backlit and over-saturated colors in portrait mode. There’s a guy in my local community group that posts AI images daily, and people get emotional over them, not even knowing (or caring) that they’re fake. People are changing faster than the technology in my opinion, and it has me second guessing my whole existence.

The argument here is really the same we've had time and again within photography. Auto Focus was going to make it too easy, digital was going to make it so anyone could do this, AI is going to take our jobs, algorithmic shooters relying on auto will replace the need to hire a professional. We've heard this argument before, we're still here. Photography isn't dead, photography, is as always, changing. Photographers who don't evolve with the times fade away, and the next generation of photographers will continue the cycle. Some of us grow, adapt and embrace the changing times, some of us don't.

As a business it is, it will limited to a few. As art form it would always be around! If as a business it wasn’t dead people would be posting photos instead of videos on how to take them (it’s what pays the bills), has photographers out artistic side doesn’t want to face it!

Photography for myself is alive and thriving. I'm not trying to make money doing it. I'm not trying to share everything on social media. I have a ton of prints that I've made over the last 5 years or so that very few people have seen, and I love them. I do it for myself, and it brings so much joy and fulfillment to my life.

Photography YouTube, however, leaves a lot to be desired. It's a lot of "Why you need the X100VI in 2024" and next year they will just change the title to 2025, and then the same in 2026. I don't trust a single review of a camera these days, but this is a problem across many industries not just photography. It's really hard to find sincere content these days. It's out there, you just have to sort through 90% garbage first.

I don"t think it"s dead I think in some ways it is getting bigger, now mind you I do believe it is changing and maybe to a point where some purist may not think it is photography but I do believe people will be taking pictures for a long time

I think its dead. I went to school for photography. Worked for lifetouch (school portrait company). I've freelanced. Ive worked at an ad agency. I've done it all, and im only 28. I have some big problems with the industry. 1 people think because its easy today with technology, it doesn't have value in other word. "im not asking for prints i just want something i can post to social media. So i dont think you deserve to be paid for time and talent as much." 2 companies look at the gear you use and won't give you a job based on that. I've lost jobs cause i didn't look professional with the latest and greatest camera gear. Lifetouch made you have the newest camera and didn't help you get it. So basically, i couldn't keep up and quit. Now, the landscape is changing as well, thanks to Ai. Pros in Photoshop are no longer needed. I was replaced by the ad agency cause ai can do something in Photoshop that took me an hour. All is not lost, though. Photography has become my hobby now, and im happier now. Friend needs portraits of their kid for yearbook, sure. My friend needs a small ad done, ok. I do photography because i love it. Im not in it to make money. Am i sorry that i wasted my college education on it, kinda. But that's life. Things change.

Dead? No, I think the opposite is the case… photography has changed. The camera is having a much harder time these past few years but photography and pics have exploded. Why do you think cell phones are getting better and better image and video capabilities? More people are taking pictures today than ever before. I think if anything, its the art of photography that may be dying. Although cell phones have many features now, lower light, portrait modes, HDR… the creativity of aperture, shutter speed and ISO in unknown to most. Companies today have finally understood the connection with cell phones and the Bluetooth connectivity with cameras have improved. I’m hoping this compatibility with cell phones will bring back a resurgence in cameras. Great video and love the topic.

I find the technical side of photography boring. I mostly just like working on getting people energized to be in a picture. Idk if photography is dead but it's beyond easy technically these days.

Not automatic camera settings kill photography. They are available for decades. AI has the potential to kill a substantial part of photography.
