How To Replace Your old thermostat
On this weeks edition of BS with AJ ill be showing you how to replace your old style thermostat with a digital programmable thermostat!

Here is a list of tools you may need:

The first step would be to turn off the breaker that provides power to your HVAC unit.
Next you will need to start by removing the old thermostat.
This should be quite easy to do. start by popping off the front of the thermostat. mine snapped into place but yours may be screwed together. Next you will need to take note of where your wires are connecting. Mine was all color coded but yours may be wired differently so be sure to write down where they connect or take a picture of it so you can reference it when you go to put the new one in place. next you will need to remove the screws that are holding the backing plate on the wall. you should have your old thermostat completely removed at this point.
Now simply reverse the instructions to install the new one. First pick where you want your new thermostat to mount on your wall. you will need to drill two holes for your drywall anchors.
Next you will reconnect the thermostat wires in the same manor as you disconnected them on the old one. again mine was color coded your may be wired up differently, so be sure and pay close attention when you disconnect the old thermostat. after you wire it up properly you will need to mount it to the wall by screwing the backing plate to the drywall anchors. after that you will need to put batteries in your new thermostat. pop the front onto the backing plate and set it up, put in the date and the day of week and program it however you would like. all that's left to do is flip the breaker back on to the HVAC unit and your done!

Thank you so much for posting this video!! I have been frantically searching because I'm pretty sure my old Honeywell round thermostat has died because the heat will not turn on. I feel pretty confident I might be able to go to a digital because of you.

You really made it look so simple. I think I’m gonna try this myself. I have the same old Honeywell thermostat you replaced and recently the fan switch started to malfunction so I’m sure the thermostat is the culprit. After 21 yrs I figure go w a gd digital one. Was looking at the one you just installed, cause it looks simple

My old thermostat has a Yellow, Green, Orange, Red, and Brown(W2), and 2 others a Black Wire going to X and a White wire going to E. I assume those are Emergency and Aux heat. We have a single stage Heat Pump outside, and a indoor furnace with emergency heat. Chatting with a Nest guy on a reddit forum he said to run the Black X wire to Common on the Nest learning thermostat. Any ideas?
