Dr Ariel Waitzman discusses how to stop a nosebleed fast. Wether its at home, in a doctors office or at a hospital, there are different methods that can be used to treat Epistaxis fairly quickly.

How do you stop a nosebleed fast?
At home you can start treatment, if someone gets a nosebleed, often applying pressure for a long period of time can stop a nosebleed.

One common misconception is: There is no reason for the head to tilt backwards.

You can pinch the nose in the middle between the bone and the bottom of the nostril. The key thing is that the pressure has to be firm and the pressure has to be held continuously for a bare minimum of 5-10 minutes for a blood clot to be created. Anyone on blood thinners will need at least 10 minutes of pressure.

90% of nosebleeds come from the front of the nose, if we can visualize it, epistaxis can be treated fairly easily. At Dearborn ENT we can cauterize the nose to block the blood in the blood vessel.

Another option is nasal packing. Nasal packing is something we try to avoid here because it can be painful and traumatic to the nose. At a hospital this will often be the next option.

You can prevent a nosebleed. with moisture in the nostril, a humidifier, saline sprays and
saline gels

We would be happy to answer any questions!

One thing he forgets to mention if you can use a cold ice pack in the back of your neck to stop the nose bleed faster especially when it’s further back in the nose and your regular nose pinching don’t work it’ll stop with an account of five if you put it in the back of the neck but it Hass to be ice but I under cold pack

I've had four nose bleeds today, each one I had multiple blood clots. I suffer from Sinusitis. I do have an appointment next Thursday with ENT. Should I go to the ED, if this continues? Thanks

Would love to know what your idea of "heavy bleeding" is. To me...my kids (frequent) bloody noses are always heavy. And pinching their noses with pressure never works. I try. And i try pressure with tissues, rag, toilet paper, even tried tampons! But then they get these huge clots. They always last 20 to 30 min. And typically continue on and off for multiple days - a week at a time. Dry air def seems to be a contributor.

Just went to ER 4 days ago.. nosebleed would not stop. They put a rapid rhino packing in there.it comes out tomorrow. Will my ENT suggest cauterization once removed?

I always go straight to packing with tissues until it's stopped and I can clean the outside of all the blood. Then I just unpack slowly inhaling as much as I can to dry inside, or if it's too humid then I use a fan or some other means to blow dry air towards my nose and up while unpacking delicately.
