BioForest/Lallemand inc. has developed a natural biological control to treat stumps of invasive shrubs like buckthorn, using a native, naturally occurring fungus, Chondrostereum purpureum. The application of ‘Lalcide Chondro’ to cut stumps or girdled stems is highly effective in controlling suckering of buckthorn stumps and introducing silverleaf disease for full control 24 months after treatment. Rhoda deJonge, PhD, Technical Manager of Urban Forestry at Lallemand Plant Care will explain how the fungus works, discuss latest research findings, and describe research plans to treat additional invasive shrubs in 2022. This biological herbicide is an ideal tool to reduce buckthorn shrubs in both our urban and rural woodlands, allowing native flora the opportunity to flourish and is particularly useful in areas where chemical herbicides are not preferred or permitted.
