Replacing the fan in our PSU with Noctua the right way.

One of our awesome channel members recently donated a 1000w Cooler Master power supply to us but it had a little issue with its fan. After a bit of investigation it appeared someone at some point had tried to change the fan out and made a right mess of it so we are going to fix it properly.

some psus have a lower starting voltage for the fans, not all fans would work for all psus necessarily, the Arctic p12s have a safe starting voltage at 2.8v, but some noctuas can go up to 7 or 8, and may not work with most psus that don't output said amount to a pht

PHT connector?
I have done a bit of electronics. Not sure what this is.
I thought the connectors were Molex or perhaps JST
I googled PHT and found nothing.
I'm planning to replace the fan in my PSU this week as its making annoying noises.
I've ordered the fan which obviously has the wrong connector.
I'd like to know what the "correct" connector is.
Thanks.

Never changed a fan before, but I do like to buy older systems to mess around with and the dustier the system the further apart I tend to take it for cleaning. I also tend to take them apart when they look cheap, just to check for blown caps.

Would be nice if you explain teach us how to make this 3pin to PhD 2pin connectors.

only thing I would add is that you should tape off half of the fan when putting it back in. Most power supplies should come with a plastic air guide that directs air over the components and out the exhaust properly. Without this guide you have much more turbulent flow and recirculation of air, making the cooling less efficient.

I always get a <£5 DC to PWM converter to turn the DC fan into a PWM fan.
Aftermarket DC fans, IME, have too-high startup voltages and too-high minimum speeds; I put a Noctua F12 in mine and, along with the controller (which fits easily), I get the full range of speeds from <300 to max.

I had to do something similar on an old PSU where the fan started to wobble and making a racket, except the fan wires was directly soldered onto the board, i opted for connecting it to the motherboard instead through the PSU grommet and using it as an extra exhaust fan, i didn't wanna start soldering on an PSU, while i do have the know how i wouldn't wanna risk messing something up over a simple fan swap.

Wow surprised what had gone on in the PSUs past life! 3d printing to make a fan fit sounds like hard work just get the right size fan right? Excellent upgrade!

Doing this mod with a Corsair sf750 which has a mini 4 pin, what would the adapter be for that?

My PSU fan is a bit louder than I like and I have tinnitus so it's causing me issues, so this is something I'm interested in. That cable you made, do you have instructions for it plz ?

EDIT: n/m found answer further down, thanks!

Hello, could you tell me, can I use p12 Arctic fan (2000rpm) to my Aerocool 750W PSU by connecting the fan to motherboard? The fan speed will be controlled based on CPU temperature. Is this a good idea? I have GeForce 3600Ti (max 200W)

One very important point that was completely missed: which direction does the air flow go???
