2025 Audi SQ5 Review: Performance SUV Refined

Audi's popular midsize performance SUV, the SQ5, enters its third generation with a host of improvements that promise to keep it at the forefront of the luxury crossover segment. Set to hit European dealerships in the first quarter of 2025, the new SQ5 brings a sharpened design, advanced technology, and enhanced performance to the table.

At the heart of the 2025 SQ5 lies a potent 3.0-liter V6 TFSI engine, delivering an impressive 270 kW (362 hp) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. While Audi hasn't released official performance figures, we expect the new model to improve upon its predecessor's already brisk acceleration. The addition of MHEV plus technology, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, not only boosts efficiency but also provides an extra 18 kW (24 hp) of power for short bursts. This system even allows for limited electric-only maneuvering and parking.

Visually, the 2025 SQ5 maintains Audi's signature styling while adopting a more dynamic stance. The front end features a wider Singleframe grille and redesigned LED headlights, while the rear boasts a clean look with a full-width light strip. Quad exhaust tips, a hallmark of Audi's S models, complete the sporty appearance.

Inside, the SQ5 embraces Audi's "Digital Stage" concept. The cockpit is dominated by the new Audi MMI panoramic display, which combines an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Both utilize OLED technology and feature a curved design for improved visibility and touch response. An optional 10.9-inch passenger display adds an extra layer of tech sophistication.

Audi has paid particular attention to the SQ5's ride and handling. The standard sport suspension features passive dampers with Frequency Selective Damping (FSD), aiming to balance sportiness with comfort. For those seeking the ultimate in ride quality, adaptive air suspension remains an option. Enhanced progressive steering promises improved feedback and precision, which, combined with Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system, should deliver confident handling that belies the vehicle's SUV classification.

The 2025 SQ5 also showcases Audi's prowess in lighting technology. Second-generation digital OLED taillights with 266 segments can display unique light signatures and even communicate with other vehicles. At the front, Matrix LED headlights with an active digital light signature offer drivers a choice of eight different light patterns, adding a level of personalization previously unseen in this segment.

Safety and driver assistance features are comprehensive, with lane departure warning, efficiency assistant, and attention and drowsiness assistant coming as standard. Optional packages add more advanced features like Adaptive Driving Assistant plus, which utilizes high-resolution map data and swarm intelligence for improved traffic sign recognition and semi-autonomous driving capabilities.

With a starting price of €82,900 in Germany, the 2025 Audi SQ5 positions itself firmly in the premium performance SUV segment. While it may not represent a revolutionary leap forward, the thoughtful updates across design, technology, and efficiency should keep it competitive against rivals like the BMW X3 M40i and Mercedes-AMG GLC 43.

Orders for the new SQ5 open in September 2024, giving potential buyers ample time to consider this refined performance SUV. For those seeking a balance of luxury, performance, and cutting-edge technology in a practical package, the 2025 Audi SQ5 makes a compelling case.
