Doddy is back with the latest episode in the GMBN Tech Essentials Series and more basic maintenance tips! This time it's removal and replacement of a cassette and chain. With the right tools, it’s a simple and quick job.

By using a chain breaker or chain pliers, a chain is easy to remove and replace. Paired with a fresh cassette, you’ll have fantastic and crisp shifting. As Doddy explains, it 's better to replace both at once as they mesh and wear together.

I said it before, and i'll say it again. Doddy is the absolute best presenter GMBN has ever had. He is awesome at presenting something such as the dirt shed show, but is also quite frankly a damn wizard at the tech stuff. I wish I could fit him into my riding bag out on the trails. Lmao

"This chain is made by Box Components, it comes in a Box" 😂

The greatest thing about this guy and his vids?? HE GETS STRAIGHT TO THE POINT! How many other YouTube vids that have a 10 min preamble, beating around the bush and repeating the same point five times. This is gold, thank you!

Hey, when using an adjustable wrench / spanner / shifter, the adjustable jaw should be on the direction of force. You have it on the load side, this could result in slippage or failure. No so important on low loads as this, but best practice for tool life. Cheers and love your work.

Massive thank you to you guys at Gmbn tech been watching this for a while and today I managed to change the chain cassette and rear derailleur on my sons bike he was well impressed and well I know that 6 months ago I couldn’t have done that and would have had to pay the bike shop to do it so thank you you’ve brought m3 and my youngest boy closer together and saved me money

Thanks Doddy and @gmbn for giving me the knowledge and confidence to do this myself. It was pretty easy and about a 20 minute job.

Factory grease is not meant for cycling, but for packaging. If used on a bike it will collect so much dirt!!
Also, there are remaining metal pieces within the chain from the manifactoring, so be sure to clean it properly(!) and apply wax or lube made for using the chain on the bike.

KMC say 0.40, also check at multiple spots.
I got the KMC digital chain checker, I love it, but not cheap.

#GMBNTech so great full for this video. I’ve been wanting to learn how to completely disassemble my drive train for a deep clean prior to winter warm storage. THANK YOU DODDY!!

13:40 I add Loctite, and crank it, until it stops, but it will eventually come looser at some point, at least for me it does. I use Abbey Tools Crombie, cus I don't want to drop tools, but proper socket works well too.

About to have to do the first cassette change on my mountain bike. I just did one on my hybrid bike and decided my road bike wasn't even worth the effort so I just sold it lol.

Point to note:
Masterlinks should only be used once. Shimano will not guarantee reused links, which may cause damage to cassette, chain rings, spokes and frame. A new link is to be used everytime you break the chain.
