I like how she didn’t make the hawk sound like a bad creature. Some people don’t understand that they need to eat too, they have a family to feed, or just even feed themselves to stay alive.

Unfortunately, she passed away about an hour later, peacefully in my hands. I put her body out near where the hawk had been, and she was gone the next time I checked. I wish there was more I could've done to help her, but there was too much internal bleeding. However, I am glad that she didn't spend her final moments in terror of the hawk, but in peace with me.

Im glad that while you let your empathy help the squirrel you didnt demonize the hawk for just trying to eat, and that after it passed away you left it out for the hawk so it could have a meal, being empathetic to not just the squirrel but to the hawk as well and giving back to nature.
Its actually kind of beautiful in a way.

animals caught by hawks almost always have internal damage that they won’t be able to survive. it might seem kind to try to save them, but it only makes their death longer and more painful, as well as depriving the hawk of a meal that it expended a lot of energy getting. please do not do this

Hunny that was the perfect opportunity to teach your son about the way the wild works and that the little squirrel is already dead and at that point it is just prolonging the pain and suffering. Sadly i see alot of dead animals on our farm but it teaches you how precious life really is and how fast it can be over. Bery valuable lesson in my opinion for all kids to learn. A healthy respect for life and limits ❤ good luck though

I actually have a pet squirrel! This is a very sad sight to see for me, this poor baby squirrel is going through so much. I hope the mom comes soon!
