Lucas Raymond became the latest young star to sign a long-term deal with his team, inking an eight-year contract with an AAV of $8.075 million with the Red Wings. Are teams paying young players too much, too fast? TSN Hockey analyst Frankie Corrado shares why he doesn't think so in Tuesday's Talking Point.

It’s calculated risk taking. Giving a guy like Raymond 8x8 after the season he just had is likely an overpayment. If he continues on an upward trajectory, it’s a steal. If the alternative is losing the player, I don’t see another option. At the end of the day, if the player pans out, it will be seen as a great move. If the player fizzles or doesn’t continue to improve, it will be seen as a terrible deal. The cap is rising. Players know their value. It’s just how the league is right now.

Even though Raymond got 8x8 he is still not the highest paid player on the team, that's Larkin. Outside of his Sophomore season where he had that terrible stretch, he has been outstanding. He had the most points and was 2nd in Goals so unless he gets hurt or his production drops off, I believe most all Detroit fans think this is a good deal, not too much and not too little. Now we need to see what Yzerman does for Seider and that will be the end of it.

the upside is MacKinnon/Draisaitl underpays that lead to winning a cup (Edmonton blew their chance because they are one of the worst managed franchises in all of sports)

Slaf has an amazing contract and way higher ceiling than Raymond

It is a case-by-case basis..and Evan Bouchard is terrible defensively, quite important when you are a DEFENSEMAN.
