1 thing that is missing. Depending on what you are trying to do with the file, it may be best to open it as a merged file instead of layers. I ran into this where a designer only uses Photoshop and sent me a PSD file. When I opened it, the orange background was Grey instead because Gimp could not use all the layered information that Photoshop currently uses.

If you open a PSD file and the colors or image does not look correct, you will need to open it as a merged file. This will cause you to lose all layers. (same as exporting Gimp image as JPG).

So instead opening with auto detection you need to tell it to open as merged. From the open menu as seen at the 1:00 minute mark, bottom left of the dialog box you can see where it says "Select File Type (Automatically Detected)"

You will need to click on the Plus button and scroll down the menu to where it says "Photoshop image (merged)" and select that option, then select open. You should now have a proper looking single layer image.

i know how to open a file, my gimp decided to not open it at all
