I took piano at age 6 and violin a few years later. Worked great for me! But then again, my parents could afford, and were committed to providing us excellent private teachers. Having taught music many years, I used xylophones or glockenspiel, hand drums, ukulele, keyboards, singing (a lot), and by 5th grade, guitar, bass, drums, recorders, music appreciation, and more advanced keyboard studies . I had the advantage of small classrooms, good funding, and freedom of methods.
