Those forts are less rare than you may think. There's one on the banks of the River Lea at Hallingbury near Bishop's Stortford that has never been excavated and had houses built inside about 120 years ago. The occupiers are not allowed to dig more than 12 inches deep anywhere. It is a classic D shaped Viking fort against a river. Because they built it on high ground on the bend of the river they only had to build full scale defences on 2 sides instead of all four sides and they could easily resupply by boat.

Norsemen were everywhere.
Everywhere.
We were there before time existed, probably.
Hail Odin.
