Yes, because LFP is a chemistry and 4680 is a battery size. Two different things. Now, Tesla's 4680 may be currently locked to a chemistry but I've read that they intend to allow any chemistry so that they can go everywhere where Tesla puts them, no matter the chemistry.

The good thing about the battery race is Tesla has partnerships with whoever is winning and can switch suppliers when it makes sense.

Your the first Youtuber I have hears mention CALB, I bought their lfp batteries 5 years ago and used them every day flawlessly for all my power at home, they amaze me to this day how I have been able to be off the grid so easily.

Batteries are not just about energy density and chemistry but how cheap you can make them. The dry electrode and cathode manufacturing that they have now mastered will make them cheap. The 4680 is just form. They have already said they will be exploring different materials and chemistries

4680 is a battery type defined by the shape and specs/size of the outer shell of the battery. kind of like AAA or AA or C or D batteries. And just like you an have NiCad, alkaline, mercury, zinc carbon, AAA or AA or C or D sized batteries, you can have the 4680 with different chemistries. I'm sure the industry and Tesla will use the latest greatest battery chemistry of the day for the 4680 battery

Hi Sam, This is all well and good for 4680 batts, but we need to address a problem. Yesterday a major highway artery in CA was shut down due to a thermal runaway of a Tesla Semi battery pack. The Highway Patrol shut down the entire East-West freeway due to "toxic gas" emissions from the fire. As T Semi production is forecast to ramp up this year we cannot have this happen very often or all major truck routes in the US will jam up.

You have such good lead-ins for your videos. Bravo !

I think the 4680 cell will go away because the cylindrical shape takes up too much room. Energy density will come down to the best use of the volume available at some point.

Wasn't it LG Chem that made the Chevrolet Bolt batteries that went on fire?
Hopefully they have learned a few lessons from that.

You have many good points. This reminds me about solid state batteries, which have been pitched as the holy grail for many years now. And the big question is will SS batteries raise reliability, lower cost, and ramp up to volume production before a competing (superior) battery chemistry comes out. CATL is coming out with several competitive battery chemistries for various vertical markets. Offering lower cost sodium batteries, or offering chemistries that provide faster charging, or longer life, better safety, easy recycling, higher energy density, etc.. And maybe the final solutions will have hybrid packs that mix batteries to provide all of those benefits for the baseline 125 miles for normal daily driving, and then up to 300 additional miles for the rare times that is needed.

The great thing about vertical integration is that you can drive suppliers prices down. If you can produce batteries at £2 each and the competitors can’t match this you don’t have to buy off those suppliers.

Great that everyone is coming up with better batteries. Tesla does focus on scalable technologies that can handle production. The best of the batteries that can be scaled will be the future. Right now, my Model 3 (M3) as pointed out in your other video is good enough. It is not worth waiting for a battery without a good history to back it up.

Agree, sodium ion structural (possibly hybrid) are the future.

The future is blade cells, not silly cylinders. You can control the packing density. Not so with cylinders.

The demand for batteries is so great at the moment that I don’t think it will matter as long as the battery has a certain value in terms of cost, durability, thermal runway, energy density. Transport and Energy globally still requires so many more batteries for this transition it won’t matter if it is A Tesla dry cathode 4680 batteries and a CATL LFP batteries.

Think Tesla may be losing ground in Batteries, such fast change at the mo.

We need more coverage on any safe tech. that are developed to overcome thermal runaway at cell level(it really matters, since a puncture short or elevated ambient thermal event is highly likely in an accident/parked scenario). Anything, that slows down heat transmission, isolates cell thermally, outgasses Co2🙄 to reduce O2 concentration to make thermal runaway, next to impossible🤞😂.❤👍

I used to be a big fan of the 4680, but after seeing your vids on CATL’s blade battery, I think that’s what’s going to win out in the long run. It also seems like a square/rectangle is more efficient to pack than a cylinder.

LG isn’t expected to ramp their dry coating 4680 until 2028.
20-30% savings doesn’t match the 69% Tesla claimed at battery day.
Tesla just have so many innovations.
