Why is Chile shaped like that?

If you look at a World Map, the most unique or rather weird shape that you would find would definitely be of Chile's. It's just so long and so thin at the same time. So, how did Chile get this strange shape?

Kudos on your correct pronunciation of Chile. The area you marked as controlled by the Mapuche people is wrong though. They lived further north and Chile colonized the area you marked before conquering them.
