I think when people claim Chile is the longest country, they probably mean longest compared with the width.

I think the reason why people (visually) think Chile is longer is because Brazil has a bigger width than Chile. Chile being narrow gives it an illusion of being longer than Brazil, even though absolute distances say otherwise. 😊

The contiguous distance of Chiles northern to southernmost point is 4042km not 4270km. This makes it the third tallest country in the world. In addition to being the widest country Russia is also the second tallest with a contiguous distance of 4, 065km from north to south.
