I wouldn't say that she lost to Zorro on the basis of skill but rather on the basis of emotion and awareness of her surroundings. Early during the duel, she showed to be better skilled but as the fight went on her frustration and temper caused her to lose and I think this was intentional on Zorro's part. He knew that she wasn't an amateur so his best course of action was to rattle her emotionally and wait for her to make a mistake. It was his strategy from the start by attempting to walk past and imply that she didn't know how to use a sword was a deliberate attempt to get a rise out of her. If you can't keep a cool head in a fight then you've already lost the fight before it even began because you'll be on defense while the opponent will have a clear mind and see your obvious mistakes.

An underrated, wonderful movie, one of my favorites! It has everything: excellent acting, duel scenes/action sequences, soundtrack, chemistry between the characters, a revenge plot, romance story, and mentor-student relationship. The way a swashbuckling film should be done!

This is the best Zorro ever done - and there have been many versions. Zeta-Jones was red hot in this film and Antonio was absolutely perfect as Zorro; funny and dynamic. In the top 10 sword films ever made.
