When a power-crazed despot schemes to buy California from Mexico, it takes two Zorros--the legendary Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins) and his chosen successor Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas), a dashing bandit-turned-hero-- to defeat the tyrant's unscrupulous plans. But can even their combined skills, bravado and derring-do be enough to achieve de la Vega's ultimate goal: revenge against the man who killed his wife, kidnapped his daughter and held him prisoner for twenty years?

-"Ah. The much debated Zorro."
-"No. The Legendary Zorro."
Amazing line, great delivery.

It is nearly impossible to find a fault with this movie. There is humour, romance and action all melded together into a storyline that is made up of rich three dimensional characters. I have watched it numerous times and I still find myself rooting for our heroes. Cheering for their success and feeling sadness at their losses.

Watching this movie again, I'm noticing how skilled and clever the choreography, and by extension, Captain Love is. He doesn't try the same strategy twice.
When he first fights Zorro at 1:23, he's going for a quick kill. Every attack is a direct attack, but Zorro's defenses are too good for that.
At 1:45 he tries to power through Zorro's defenses with strength and savagery, but Zorro matches his muscle.
So when he faces Zorro the second time at 2:49, he changes tactics, focusing on disarming Zorro--and succeeds. But he's not counting on Zorro being as good a brawler as he is a fencer.
It's just really good, thoughtful action storytelling!

This movie is aging like wine. I can’t help but compare the awesome cinematography and fight choreography, to a lot of modern action films. It’s simply beautiful. The camera is there to bring out the best in what’s happening in front of it. CGI is now overused to the point of ridiculousness. Making movies like these stand out, far more than they did at the time of their release. A perfect action/adventure flick. On top of which, the characterization of Zorro, and bringing his fox-like agility and movements to the forefront, was an amazing idea. Exactly what it needed to be.

I want to give the villians props, neither of them were cowards. They weren't afraid to take the fight to Zorro everytime.

James Horner's film score (orchestral music) was incredible for the scene. His tapping and clapping elements really added to the flamenco style, and the Shakuhachi Flute adds even more to the storytelling.

I love this movie, and Antonio Banderas played the part of Zorro to total perfection!!! And the swordsmanship and choreography was just top-notch, I wish that there was more movies like this....

In my humble opinion, I can think of no better sword fight ever put to film than the hallway fight with Zorro, Captain Love and Don Raphael. Everything is cinematically perfect... the pacing, the music, the esthetic, the escalation, the emotion in their faces, all just perfect! The fight at the end between Zorro and Love is also amazing, and so is the one near the beginning between Don Rafael and Don Diego. The whole intro of this film is great, filled with tension and excitement, and so are the scenes as it ramps up to the end. This movie just rocks!

2:38 Has anyone else connected that the fight on the table is symbolic of the TRAINING CIRCLE from earlier in the movie? That whole scene shows that his "skill with the sword" has allowed him to be "that much closer" to his enemy, to his revenge.

Didn't catch this as a kid, but it's no wonder Raphael fights with such ferocity here, as if he's trying to beat back a ghost from his past that he thought had been dead for years

This movie had great action, humor, and drama. Not to always compare everything to modern films, but it's superior to most action movies and comic book movies of today.

I LOVE a good sword fight in movies. This was a GREAT sword fight! I miss classic fight choreography that didn’t rely on CG. Just perfectly sequenced, choreographed, and timed battles with actual performers in front of a camera. The definition of EPIC!

1:52 Ok but like props to Stuart Wilson who actually really brought it with this action sequence even at around age 51.

The flip in the hallway... [Chef's kiss]

Honestly Antonio Banderas made this movie. Without him it wouldn't have had those tiny nuances that made it great. The little self deprecating tics and smiles, the playfulness. Desperado/Zorro/Puss in Boots easily my top three roles.

Criminally underrated film. The action, the story, the humor, the stunts. Everything works in this film

I love how this scene escalates from one fight to the next. It starts at a heck of a pace with Captain Love, but then steps UP when Don Raphael takes over, clearly a better swordsman than Love... then it escalates AGAIN as he takes on BOTH of them, before finally taking on the whole bloody garrison from the top of the table. Just BRILLIANT, this has to be one of the best sword fights I've ever seen in a film.

I'd love to know if Shadiversity or Jill Bearup have analyzed it.

One of the finest examples of cinematic fight scenes that emphasize character and story through the choreography, on the same level as HK martial arts films. This entire sequence is legendary

Of all the folk heroes, Zorro for me stands above them all, a real patron of justice and heroism, always fighting for the people..
