I don't think they implied that the pilot went unresponsive and crashed because of the radiation, you can hear the radio become static, I think what happened was that the pilot's controls and communications got messed up because of the strong radiation, and as he was panicking trying to figure out what to do, the propeller struck the crane line and ultimately the Mi-8 crashed. It happened just like this in real life, people say this rendition is inaccurate but I think it was just misinterpreted.

This scene will always be one of the saddest ones for me. Along with the men having to kill the animals in the area. All in all, this series is amazingly done.

If you watch closely the helicopter crashes because it hit the crane like it did in real life. Dunno why people criticise it for not happening.

The helicopter didn't crash from the radioactive smoke. It crashed when the blades hit the crane wires.
