Got the VW Sharan 1.9 TDI for towing heavy trailer and holidays, with about 340000 km and the 730d F01 ( N57 ) with 265000 km as daily long range driving car..

Both engines are excellent, no problems till now.
My personal recommend :
change the oil every 10-12k km, listen to unusual sounds and not wait too long to check if there's sth wrong

Starting with n47 as top tier for reliability...sure, if you push out the hpfp, timing chain, egr, egr cooler which can catch fire, swirl flaps which can get aspirated in the engine and the road bearings which can crack it's top tier for reliability

I still own Audi 80 1.8 55kW From 1989 . Runs both on petrol and LPG. Has about 1 milion km. Changed instrument panel 4 times because they all just stopped over 450.000 km.

You completely missed mentioning the Mercedes M103 & M104 inline 6 cyclinder engines. Easily go 300, 000 with proper oil changes. What about the Mercedes M119 V8's. Smooth, quiet refined and reliable. I sold my 1993 400E with 185, 000 miles, still running the same as the day it rolled off the assembly line.

I helped restore a 1924 Rolls Royce with 1, 500, 000 miles on it and the engine was like new! I drove a 1958 GMC Brigidere General with a 12-71 V12 gas engine. It had 1, 600, 000 miles on it and had only ever had plugs points and condensers changed. How can they compare garbage to real engines?

Peugeot/Citroen 2.0 diesels often top 500.000k miles with proper maintenance, as I can attest after maintaining minicabs for 20+ years

Never in a milion years would I thought someone would have the audacity to say that the N57 engines are known for their longevity and should be on top of your list. 😂

This is more like: 8 decent reliable European Engines we know.
BMW N series are good but only if you change Oil every 10k miles. Some Peugeot and Renault engines were excellent but not well known outside Europe. For instance the Renault Energy Engine or the PSA DW engine (best in class regarding noise at that time). Mercedes adapted the Renault Diesel K-Engine in small vehicles. They were amazed about the performance and smoothness considering its simplicity. Most of there engines were very reliable when maintenance was taken serious.
