Just a small update. You are able to PRE ORDER the CPUs, motherboards, etc. today. As usual, we don't recommend buying anything before official reviews hit but if you have a case of FOMO, GOOD LUCK!

A good thing to test would be how E-Cores actually influence gaming with background processes rather than your typical benchmark, think like a browser being opened in the background, maybe OBS or something. Basically to test if having different cores is beneficial in your usual gaming sessions.

As an old electronic tech I would rather have maximum power draw then an averaged power draw - I can build out my system based on that and then add 30% for cooling and powersupply additional overhead and feel good that build will not go up in a cloud of smoke and flame.

Apparently the gaming benchmarks vs AMD were also with the broken Windows 11 state where AMD had a severe latency bug with L3 cache like 2-3x worse.

Any guess on the timing for your full review?

My PC was stolen so I've been patiently assembling parts for a build and am now waiting to see how this pans out. GPU acquired though!

AMD, Intel and Apple all bringing their A Game. Nice!

I am glad this vid pointed out the 241W Power draw (150W on 12600k). I know reviews are not out yet but this looks like it'll either run hot or it'll downclock if you don't have high end cooling. Will wait for official reviews that actually cover this aspect but might eventually stick to my original Ryzen upgrade path. The more pressing issue for me isnt cpu but gpu (pricing and availability) .

Ad spot: _features a powerful, effective cooler_

Thanks, Canucks. I needed that laugh. 😆

Hell yeah, this is what competition looks like a super win for us consumers.

But the 5800x I had ran over 150w during full load so the whole "AMD is so much more efficient and uses less power" is bullshit.

The best thing about Alder Lake is the PCIe connectivity, now you can have PCIe slots and more m.2 drives than you can reasonably fill :D

Let’s be honest. Lets see 16core vs 16core straight up. Excited to see the benchmarks.

it doesn't bode well that they are lifting embargo on the same day it will retail. makes me concerned they don't quite trust the performance. reminds of of vega launch

If these PL2 values are true, they’re actually a considerable improvement over Intel’s 10th and 11th gens, and a return to 8th-9th gen levels of power consumption. I’m alright with that. For perspective, a $60-65 CAD be quiet! Shadow Rock 3 could cool the i7-12700K, and it’s possible you could cool the i5-12600K for as little as $30 CAD.

Even the slight reining in of the 12900K to 241W will do a lot, finally making it possible to run at full tilt with an NH-D15 or a Dark Rock Pro 4. It’s not ideal, but it’s far better than what we had a year ago.

Great first look Ebert. I am excited to see your numbers here in about a week?

8:00 Um… this is a step in the right direction, not the wrong one. TDP has been a lie for years, and Intel actually listing the PL2 is a good step towards at least being honest about it.

Also, these chips use about 10-20% less power than Comet Lake. I’ll take that, at least for now.

"Intel is trying to pull out all the stops to compete with AMD"
Well yeah, if you want more performance but you can't make your fab process better, you throw more in power consumption and heat
I'm eagerly waiting for the price-performance numbers of these chips to be released compared to AMD

Really good intro to the issues in selecting the next CPU or not!

Possibly dumb question - is an integrated GPU still harnessed for number crunching if you have an external GPU, or is it just redundant?

The GPU and CPU wars are back in full swing…sweet 🥵

As a gaming laptop enthusiast what would you recommend I do now? Wait for Alder Lake to emerge or go with current Rocket Lake / Ryzen offerings?

(I’m highly interested in the Legion 7 Gen 6 but I’m back and forth between the processors)
