Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I think before I just need to pick up the pen to draw what I like, but after watching your video, I have a completely different perspective. The art of painting a night picture is not easy, I find your analysis excellent. I learned many things from this video.

The construction paper cut out picture that you made at 6:00 is awesome. It really cuts out all the unnecessary details, literally and figuratively. Very simple yet powerful. That would make a great painting as is.

That would be a really interesting exercise, to finish a paper cut out picture first and then paint that. Maybe keeping the darks thin and flat like paper and putting in the lights and bright colors with thick impasto paint.

Chris...we stay in UAE where most of the year it's hot to warm during the day....therefore ....leaned towards night Plein air painting....this helps me a lot.thank you 👍

Thanks for the video! Night is always hard to draw, especially for me. I work mainly in watercolor and it is difficult for me to understand how to work with dark colors, but at the same time leaving the light clean and bright.
