How to Start Seeds Indoors with Less Plastic: Episode 2: DIY Paper Pots

Instead of using plastic to start seeds, we are going to provide you with two alternatives to plastic in part two of this three part garden series. These two plastic alternatives are paper towel roll seed trays or toilet paper roll seed trays, and newspaper pots for up potting your seedlings.

Both of these DIY seed starting setups are simple to make and cost nothing additional as you are repurposing / upcycling items that would already go to waste or into the regular recycling, but instead you are creating a beneficial product for your garden.

We hope this is a beneficial seed starting video for you.

Thank you for watching!

I’ve use the newspaper containers in the past, I’ve kind of forgotten about using them, thanks for the reminder.

I also like to use milk/juice cartons - just cut it in half horizontally, clean the lower half thoroughly, poke some holes in the bottom or sides and you got a plant container.

Wonderful planting ideas. Thanks. I didn'tknow the ink is soy based nowadays. Soy in the U.S. one of the GMO products unless you can get the real organic soy. I would not include ink in my soil.

This is a great idea Paul! My sister and I started our seeds in tp rolls and it worked great. We didn’t up pot early enough and a few died so I just restarted those. I used solo cups to up pot because I didn’t know what else to use. This looks fantastic.

I do have a question though. I kept my tp rolls spaced about an inch apart so they would dry fully between watering. My sister did not and when we up potted hers the rolls had molded. Is that not a concern for having the newspaper ones close together? Especially when you use a greenhouse that’s humid?

Good stuff, but I'm curious as to the necessity of the bottom flaps. I use towel rolls as well, and when ready to transplant I simply push the plant down, or cut the side depending on root and foliage growth. Soil doesn't really fall out the bottom while germinating.
Am I missing a benefit to the boxed end other than maintaining structure?
I also do not square them because roots do not like corners; most seem to get bound-up in them, although I do recognize the wasted space and tidiness of boxed edges when comparing each method.
Thank you!

I see your greenhouses in the basement and I wonder if you e ever thought about doing a vid on using them? I received one for Xmas and while I love it, it’s my first time using it. I’m also succession planting and I’m struggling to figure out when to add wind to the mix while I’m also germinating. For example, three weeks ago I started bell peppers, onions, and leeks. They all germinated and now need wind to strengthen. So I got a fan! That’s a win. But last weekend I planted marigold and tomatoes and they need to germinate buuuut I also need the wind for the older plants and every time I open the greenhouse it loses all its warmth and cools with the wind. Is there a magic formula? Should I just germinate in an upstairs window and then take everything downstairs? Help! SOS 😂
