Are All Sins Equal in the Eyes of God? (Bible Issues)

Some believe “a sin is a sin,” meaning all sins are equally bad in God’s eyes. The good news? The Bible has the answer. Let’s consider:

FIRST, WELL-INTENDED “ALL SINS ARE THE SAME-ERS” ASSUME SINCE ONE OFFENSE SEPARATES MAN FROM GOD, (THE CAUSE OF SPIRITUAL DEATH), ALL ARE EQUAL. Indeed, a single transgression uncleansed by Jesus’s blood forever condemns. God warned his first created humans, “From the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat…day…you eat…you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:17). When the devil appeared as a snake and tempted Eve to partake, she protested, “God said, you shall not eat from it or touch it, lest you die” (Genesis 3). Satan said she wouldn’t die, but attain God-like wisdom. The mother of all living and her husband consumed the forbidden fruit and suffered sudden separation from their creator.

I first heard “a sin is a sin” to justify wickedness. The reasoning went, “All Christians sin, so if I live unmarried with my girlfriend, we are no different than others at church.” Yet, every member of the Corinthian church sinned, too. Yet Paul ordered only one disfellowshipped: a man mired in mucky immorality. If not withdrawn from, he would lose his soul and corrupt the congregation. 1Cor. 5:2,7 says, “The one who had done this deed might be removed from your midst. Clean out the old leaven… “

A couple hosting me when guest speaking insisted all sins are equal, because without Christ, any sin will condemn. I asked if cars, which all have wheels, are equal. They enthusiastically answered, “Yes. All cars get you from point A to point B.” The husband had proudly shown me his new Jeep Cherokee. I wanted to ask him, since a car is a car, to trade straight it across for my 16-year-old Honda. But he was around 90. It seemed disrespectful.

SECOND, THE BIBLE TEACHES DEGREES OF SIN AND PUNISHMENT. Rejecters of Christ’s word confirmed by miracles sinned more than those who denied the word unconfirmed by miracles. Christ sent the twelve on a teaching and miracle-working mission. He said of those who would reject them in Luke 10:12, “It will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.” Luke 10:13-14 says, “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! …If the miracles had been performed in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago…It will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment, than for you.” Luke 12 says, “And that slave who knew his master’s will and did not get ready or act in accord with his will, shall receive many lashes, but [he] who did not know it, and committed deeds worthy of a flogging, will receive but few.”

THIRD, PLANNED SINS ARE WORSE THAN OTHERS. Human law recognizes premediated killing is more heinous and is more severely punished than deaths caused by negligent drivers. Discontinuing church attendance is willful. Heb. 10:25-27 says, “not forsaking our own…assembling…as is the habit of some… If we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there…remains…a certain terrifying expectation of judgment….”

FOURTH, ONE SIN IS THE WORST, SO ALL CANNOT BE EQUAL. Christ in Matthew 12:31-32 states “…Any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven…but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven… in this age, or in the age to come.” Since blasphemy of the spirit is the evilest, transgressions cannot be equal. Osama Bin Laden’s killing 3,000 innocents in the premeditated twin towers attack was more wicked in God’s eyes than a carried away grandmother who grossly exaggerates her granddaughter’s beauty and intelligence.

The takeaway? While one sin will consign the sinner eternal suffering, yet there is good news: God is greater than our transgressions! 1 John 1:7 promises, “if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” Thank you for viewing. Have a wonderful day!

(Isaiah 64:6) "all of our righteousness is like a filthy rag". Bad news for Catholics.
